SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thieves hit a well-known business causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Bill Howe Plumbing, located on Aero Drive, had their work trucks vandalized as thieves steal gas from the gas tanks. Fleet manager Rhett Wheeler says the business has been targeted at least three times in the last month. “Its a shock that someone will crawl underneath a car with a drill, drill a hole in a gas tank, to steal a couple of gallons of gasoline,” says Wheeler. Thieves have damaged at least 10 vehicles, costing the family-owned company around ,000 in damages. “We end up losing a truck for two or three days per occurrence,” says Wheeler. Wheeler is urging everyone, including businesses, to check their vehicles of leaking gas before driving off. The company has reported the incidents to police. Managers are also working on more security measures for the future. 889

San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job next month. The shipbuilder, however, says it anticipates letting go of closer to 350 workers. NASSCO says the layoffs are related to a dry dock accident in July that caused damaged to its facilities, although the workers union president says other factors are at play.“We are pursuing all available options to avoid or lessen the impact of these reductions and hope to increase our workforce as soon as possible to support work expected in 2019,” NASSCO president Kevin Graney said in a layoff notice to the state. RELATED: San Diego dry dock floods following barrier collapseThe list of jobs impacted includes 129 welders, 85 electricians, 84 painters and 82 pipe fitters.  Robert Godinez, who heads the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, said the number of potential layoffs is high because NASSCO uses an evaluation system to guide which workers it lays off. Those with the lowest evaluation are out first, and that can change with training.Godinez said he expects the layoffs to last about four to six months until NASSCO can fix its dry dock.  "If they lay off 400, 500, 600, 700, that should cover that notification requirement," he said. The layoffs come after NASSCO held a large hiring fair in April, as it looked to add 800 to 1,000 new welders and shipbuilders.However, Godinez said the shipbuilder did not hire even close to that number. He said Navy repair work fizzled and that a construction project got set back. Additionally, a union newsletter mailed before the accident reported 48 workers had been laid off  - a number too low to trigger a WARN public notice.  “People weren't ready for this, they weren't ready for the layoff,” Godinez said. “They were walking into the shipyard, they were watching these humongous banners that they’re going to be hiring like crazy and everyone’s on the upswing, and all of a sudden the layoffs start.”At the time of the accident, the fire department said a barrier that keeps water from going into the ship collapsed, leading to a flood. No one was hurt. Godinez said 4 million gallons of water rushed in and hit a 70,000 ton ship. That damage is delaying the next order, leading to the potential layoffs.NASSCO spokesman Dennis DuBard pinned the layoffs to the July 11 incident, and said the company is working to remedy the situation. 10News has since inquired about issues related to the April hiring event. “We are working diligently so not all employees who were notified will be affected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- When the pandemic hit city leaders opened the San Diego Convention Center doors to house those living on the streets. But as that time will soon come to an end, the San Diego Rescue Mission is working to give those in need a safe place to stay.The transition during the pandemic was not easy.“For people experiencing homelessness, the rates of COVID have been very low, but it was absolutely a struggle,” says Paul Armstrong with the San Diego Rescue Mission.The City of San Diego recently announced its plan to close the convention center by December. The state has reserved funds to help the city buy at least one hotel to house the homeless. Unfortunately, the hotel’s 340 units won’t be enough space for everyone.“As they ramp down their operations there, we have to be mindful to make sure we’re giving as many opportunities to the people in the convention center,” says Armstrong.The San Diego Rescue Mission is stepping in to help. Team members visit the convention center a few times during the week to notify the people of their programs.Their emergency shelter is available for women and children.They also have a year-long “Mission Academy.” It’s a three-semester program. Semester one focuses on wellness. Semester two is center around education and training.“Semester three is really preparing them, letting them focus on housing and building up,” says Armstrong. “Working and building up that savings so that they can transfer into a successful, sustainable life.”The Rescue Mission says they have seen a large success rate from the students who have completed Mission Academy. 1617

(KGTV) - A new rule from the California Air Resources Board could wind up costing San Diego MTS hundreds of millions of dollars.CARB announced a series of regulations last week, all aimed at making bus fleets more environmentally friendly.One rule says all buses need to be zero-emission by 2040.That could be costly.Right now, SDMTS uses Compressed Natural Gas in their buses, which they say burns much cleaner than diesel fuel.Those buses cost 7,000 each, and MTS buys about 50 new buses each year.New electric, zero-emission buses will cost about 2,000 each.Replacing the entire fleet with electric buses will cost 7.5 million more than CNG buses."The technology is relatively new, the costs are high right now," says MTS Spokesperson Rob Schupp. "I think CARB is looking into the future. As we encourage more and more manufacturers to build these buses, the costs will come down."San Diego MTS is already putting six electric buses in their fleet this summer as part of a pilot program.They'll use those to test how the electric buses operate across several terrains and distances in San Diego.They also received a grant to help buy 11 more for a South Bay Bus Rapid Transit line that will open in 3 years.Beyond that, MTS says they may use a combination of state funding, grants and possibly rate increases to pay for the new electric buses.Schupp says the state has plans to chip in about 0,000 per bus.The cost of new buses isn't the only concern about going electric.MTS says they need to look into how much electricity will cost compared to natural gas.They also may need to build and install charging stations around town, because the buses may not be able to go as far as they would using gas.Despite all that, Schupp says the MTS Board fully supports the change. 1812
