WASHINGTON, D.C. – Could foreign parts in voting machines be putting the U.S. election at risk for hacking? It’s a question that lawmakers have been exploring as they seek answers from top bosses at three major voting manufacturers. Tom Burt, the President and CEO OF Election Systems & Software, appeared confident as he testified before the House Administration Committee last week. “We’ve seen no evidence that our voting systems have been tampered with in any way,” said Burt. The companies that make vote tabulation systems say they welcome federal oversight of election infrastructure and need help securing their supply chains, especially for voting machine parts made in foreign countries. “Several of those components, to our knowledge, there is no option for manufacturing those in the United States,” explained Dominion Voting Systems CEO John Poulos. Cyber and national security experts say antiquated and paperless voting machines pose the most significant risk to the U.S.’s election infrastructure. Matt Blaze, a Professor of Law & Computer Science at Georgetown University, testified before the committee that even the scanners that record paper ballot selections can be tampered with. “It’s simply beyond the state of the art to build software systems that can reliably withstand targeted attack by a determined adversary,” said Blaze. In the wake of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congress is pumping nearly a billion dollars into making voting machines safer.“We're definitely in a much better position today than we were at the end of 2016,” said Liz Howard, an attorney with the nonprofit, nonpartisan Brenan Center for Justice in Washington. She also testified at last week’s hearing. “So, no machine is 100 percent secure. Election officials’ goal is to make the most resilient election system that they possibly can,” said Howard. Some are calling for regular election audits, more resources for state voting officials and the phasing out of all paperless voting machines. The Brennan Center estimates only about half of the states that used paperless voting machines in 2016 will continue to use them in 2020. Those eight states include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Some assert that requiring a paper ballot is the only way to have a reliable back-up of each vote. “We absolutely need to have a paper record of every vote cast. Right. For the first time in more than two decades, Virginia elected and just swore in a new state legislature controlled by Democrats. “Virginia is officially blue, congratulations,” said Gov. Ralph Northam, D-Virginia, on election night 2019. The new Democrat-controlled state legislature is vowing to pass gun control measures. That’s prompting some local governments to make their own moves by declaring themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuary” cities and counties. So far, more than 100 cities and counties in Virginia have declared themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.” They’re not the only ones: from Florida to Colorado to Nevada and elsewhere, local municipalities are voting in favor of designating themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.”But what does it even mean? Georgetown Law professor Mary McCord says what each declaration says varies from place to place. “Some are very much directly stating that county officials or city officials will not enforce state law that implicates or regulates, in any way, shape or form, gun ownership,” McCord said. “Others are simply espousing a support for second amendment rights.” In the end, though, she said the declarations do not hold up to legal scrutiny. “They really have no legal effect,” McCord said. “In Virginia, for example -- the Virginia Constitution and Virginia state law is very clear that it is the general assembly of the entire state -- not of any particular locality. The General Assembly makes the general laws and that those laws are supreme -- and any local ordinances resolutions, etc., that are inconsistent with those laws are void and have no effect.”Virginia’s attorney general has concluded the same thing and added that any gun control measures passed by the state legislature will be enforced. 1916

A group called "Whole Worker" is requesting Whole Foods Market to make administrative changes to improve working conditions and pay for the grocery chain's employees. To force the issue, Whole Worker is calling for a mass sickout of Whole Foods employees on Tuesday. The group was originally calling for the sickout to be held on May 1. Grocery store workers are being told to go to work as they're considered essential employees, while non-essential employees are being told to stay or work from home to prevent the spread of the virus.Among the demands, Whole Worker is requesting:-Guaranteed paid leave for all workers who isolate or self-quarantine instead of coming to work.-Reinstatement of health care coverage for part-time and seasonal workers.-Increased FSA funds to cover coronavirus testing and treatment for all team members, including part-time and seasonal.-Guaranteed hazard pay in the form of double pay during our scheduled hours.-Implementation of new policies that can facilitate social distancing between workers and customers.-Commitment to ensuring that all locations have adequate sanitation equipment and procedures in place.-Immediate shutdown of any location where a worker tests positive for COVID-19.
