BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- A reception was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Wednesday night to mark the 61st anniversary of the founding of New China, which falls on Oct. 1.Jia Qinglin, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang, all members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, joined 3,500 guests, including representatives of overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, at the reception.Addressing the reception, Jia, who is also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the country had gained great achievements over the past 61 years and overseas Chinese, along with the compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, have made remarkable contributions to the prosperity of the motherland.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, addresses a reception in Beijing, capital of China, Sept. 29, 2010, to mark the 61st anniversary of the founding of New China, which falls on Oct. 1. The mainland would adhere to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and continue to promote mutual political trust, exchanges, common sentiments and Chinese culture among compatriots on both sides of the Strait, Jia said.The Chinese government would continue to protect the legitimate rights and interests of overseas Chinese through legal means, Jia said.

PODGORICA, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), arrived in Podgorica on Thursday for a three-day official goodwill visit to Montenegro.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said in a statement issued upon his arrival that he hopes his visit will bring bilateral relations between China and Montenegro to a higher level."I am looking forward to holding in-depth discussions with Montenegrin leaders during the visit on major international and regional issues," he said. Li Changchun (R, front), a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), visits Tallinn University of Technology in Tallinn, Estonia, on Sept. 23, 2010.He added he hopes the visit will help further strengthen friendship, boost mutual trust, deepen cooperation and realize common development between the two sides.During his stay in Montenegro, Li will meet with the prime minister and the parliament speaker of Montenegro.The two sides are expected to sign a number of agreements covering economic and technology cooperation.Montenegro was the second leg of Li's four-nation tour which will also take him to Ireland and Iran. He arrived in Podgorica from the Estonian capital of Tallinn. Earlier in the day in Estonia, he made a tour of Tallinn University of Technology. He also met with the mayor of Tallinn.

TIANJIN, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The capacity of China's plantation industry might decline as a result of global warming, according to a report released during a new round of UN climate talks being held in north China's Tianjin Municipality from Oct. 4 to 9.If no proper measures were taken, the capacity of China's plantation industry might decline by 5 to 10 percent by 2030, characterized by a reduction in the output of wheat, rice and corn, said the report, released by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and several other organizations during the conference."The situation may get worse after 2050," the report warned.It said the soaring content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would have a "significant" impact on the output of wheat, rice and corn.Also, higher temperatures might put more farmland in China at risk from of insect damage and forest fires, the report explained.Further, some farmland might be inundated if the sea level rises as a result of global warming, it said.China has only about 7 percent of the world's arable land, while feeding more than 1.3 billion people which accounts for about 20 percent of the world' s population.

  

BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Pudong Development (SPD) Bank said its first-half-year net profit rose 33.92 percent from one year earlier due largely to lending boom and increased commission fees.Net profits climbed to 9.08 billion yuan (1.34 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months of this year, the Shanghai-based lender said in a statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange late Sunday.Its growth in profits stemmed from rising operating revenues, a result of growing net interest earnings, increased fee incomes and the improved quality of assets, according to the statement.Earnings per share stood at 0.791 yuan, up 20.21 percent from one year earlier. Also, operating revenues grew 36.42 percent to 22.75 billion yuan in the first half of 2010, it said.Total assets for the commercial bank hit 1.781 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 9.77 percent from the end of 2009.

  

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovich expressed here Thursday the willingness to lift the friendly and cooperative China-Ukraine relationship to a new level.They also promised to strive to increase two-way trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2012. He is also the first Ukrainian President to visit China since 2002.During the talks, Hu expressed readiness to further deepen and upgrade bilateral ties, as China has always placed importance on its relations with Ukraine, maintaining that the two sides should view bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective.He expressed the readiness to work with the Ukrainian side to strengthen political dialogue and consultation through exchanges and inter-government contact.Hu said China will continue to strengthen cooperation with Ukraine in regional and international organizations to jointly promote global peace, stability and prosperity.Yanukovich said the two sides should work together to tap into the potential of bilateral strategic cooperation.He said the two sides should strengthen political dialogue, boost exchanges of high-level officials and increase exchanges between political parties and legislatures.Yanukovich expressed readiness to expand bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, investment, finance, science, technology, infrastructure development, agriculture and aerospace.Both Hu and Yanukovich said the consensus they reached during a meeting at the nuclear security summit in Washington in April added fresh impetus to bilateral ties.During his stay in Beijing, Yanukovich will also meet with top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Yanukovich will fly to Shanghai Saturday to attend the 2010 World Expo.
