The Shenzhen Component Index rose 65.64 points, or 0.57 percent, to end at 11,530.99.Combined turnover stood at 257.19 billion yuan (38.03 billion U.S. dollars) from 297.99 billion yuan on the previous trading day.Gainers outnumbered losers by 506 to 344 in Shanghai and by 634 to 390 in Shenzhen.

BEIJING, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese general Thursday met with the head of a leading U.S. think tank and discussed the building of strong military ties between the two countries, despite military exchanges between the two nations having been frozen since January."A sound and stable China-U.S. military relationship is good for bilateral strategic trust and regional peace and stability," Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Ma Xiaotian told John Hamre, president of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).Hamre served as the U.S. deputy secretary of defense during the Clinton administration before joining CSIS in 2000.Hamre is in China at the invitation of a leading Chinese think tank, the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, for an academic symposium."China has always attached great importance to developing military ties with the United States and has made efforts in this regard," Ma told Hamre."Stronger military-to-military ties will be a very good thing for the two countries...We should have broader and deeper contact," Hamre said.On growing bilateral military ties, Ma proposed both sides respect each other's core interests and major concerns.Both sides should also properly handle differences and sensitive issues, Ma added.Hamre said China's prosperity contributes to the world, adding that the PLA's development is "logical."The former U.S. defense official said it is necessary for the two militaries to maintain candid communication to keep stable military relations.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Friday for an official friendly visit to Syria.In a written speech released at the airport, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), hailed the development of bilateral ties between China and Syria since they established diplomatic relations in 1956."China attaches great importance to the friendly ties with Syria," he said, pledging joint efforts with Syria to enhance political mutual trust, boost traditional friendship, bolster substantial cooperation and promote common development.Jia said he was looking forward to exchanging views with Syrian leaders on the further development of bilateral relations and on major international and regional issues of common concern."I believe my visit will help the people of China and Syria better know each other and boost their friendship," he said.Syria is the first leg of Jia's four-nation tour from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11. BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 24, while 24 others remained missing, officials at the rescue headquarters said Saturday.The mudslides occurred at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday in a village of Longyang District in Baoshan City.Experts said the area is prone to landslides and it is recommended to permanently remove its population to safer areas, said Zhao Maoqi, vice head of Longyang District Government.Authorities will soon begin to select a site and work on a relocation plan. Local residents are expected to move into new houses early next year, said Zhao.Up to 40,000 cubic meters of debris came crashing down on the village, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting atop a steep slope that had been soaked by rain for about 10 days.
