WASHINGTON (AP) — Hackers got into computers at the U.S. Treasury Department and possibly other federal agencies, touching off a government response involving the National Security Council. Security council spokesperson John Ullyot says on Sunday that the government is aware of reports about the hacks and is taking steps to identify and remedy any possible issues. Reuters reported Sunday that a group backed by a foreign government stole information from Treasury and a Commerce Department agency responsible for internet and telecommunications policy. Intelligence agencies are reportedly concerned that other agencies were hacked using similar tools. The Treasury Department on Sunday deferred comment to the National Security Council. 748

VISTA (CNS) - A professional photographer who sexually assaulted four teenage girls during modeling sessions at a rented Carlsbad residence where he had set up a temporary studio was sentenced to 25 years in state prison Friday.Robert Koester, 52, pleaded guilty last month to 23 felonies related to raping and inappropriately touching the teens -- some of whom were drugged and unconscious during the abuse -- as well as creating child pornography of the girls.Koester also faces federal charges locally, as well as charges in his home state of Oregon, where he's accused of assaulting additional victims.RELATED: Modeling photographer pleads guilty to sex crimes against teenagersDeputy District Attorney Dan Owens said the investigations against Koester began with one of his local victims, identified in court only as Jane Doe 1, who came forward regarding the abuse and "put a stop" to his ongoing crimes. Based on her statements, Koester was arrested Nov. 13, 2018, in Carlsbad."The victims in this case showed extraordinary strength in coming forward and speaking out against this man who victimized them," according to Owens, who said the case has had "a tremendous impact on the victims who were involved in this case, not only them, but their families."Koester, who had been hired as a contract worker by Carlsbad-based Frank Model Management, raped and took nude photographs of the girls, whose ages ranged from 15 to 17 during the San Diego County incidents. The FBI has stated that some of his alleged criminal acts date back to 1994.RELATED: Modeling photographer working in Carlsbad arrested for sexual assaultAuthorities say he worked under the aliases "Bert Kay," "Rhake Winter" and "Qitooly."He's due to be transferred to San Diego federal custody to begin his federal case, which involves creation of child pornography regarding two of the victims in the state's case. Part of his plea agreement would have any sentence he receives federally run concurrently with his 25-year prison term.He then likely will be extradited to Yamhill County in Oregon to face additional state and federal prosecution there. 2132

VISTA (CNS) — A man who beat his mother to death with a claw hammer in their Escondido apartment last year was sentenced Wednesday to 26 years to life in state prison.David Noel McGee Jr., 26, was convicted in May of first-degree murder for killing 55-year-old Rebecca "Becky" Apodaca.Deputy District Attorney Keith Watanabe said Apodaca failed to log in for her at-home medical billing job on Feb. 1, 2017, and failed to respond to messages left by her supervisor, family and friends. Apodaca's adult daughter went by the victim's apartment on North Hickory Street about 6:30 p.m. and found her mother unconscious on her blood-soaked bed.RELATED: Son accused of killing mom with claw hammerThe defendant -- naked and covered in blood -- was found hiding in a closet. He had self-inflicted knife wounds on his wrists and forearms and a self-inflicted knife wound across his neck, Watanabe said. A bloody toaster was plugged in and was sitting on the bathroom sink and an empty bottle of Benadryl was found in the bathroom.Levels of an over-the-counter antihistamine found in Benadryl were so high in the defendant's blood that he could have ingested 100 or more 25mg pills, the prosecutor said.Deputy Public Defender Lindsay Itzhaki said McGee's attack on his mother happened "in a fog of Benadryl," and that there was a difference between "killing and murder."RELATED: Man arrested, accused of killing mother in Escondido apartmentAfter his release from the hospital, McGee told police that he was depressed and blamed his mother for bringing him into the world. He claimed he heard a voice telling him to harm her, Watanabe said. 1649

WASHINGTON — As President Donald Trump continues to press his argument that the vote was rigged against him, the machinery of government and democracy is moving inexorably toward Joe Biden's presidency. As U.S. District Judge put it this week in throwing out a lawsuit challenging Biden's win in Michigan: "This ship has sailed."Trump has refused to recognize that fact and vows to press on with his challenges. On Wednesday, Trump tweeted a call to "#OVERTURN" the results of the election and has continuously tweeted baseless claims that he was the winner. But Biden is firmly on track to become president Jan. 20, after having won a decisive majority of the electoral vote.As of Tuesday, nearly every state has now certified the results of their elections, a process known as "safe harbor." With Biden's win certified, the electoral college will formally recognize Biden's win on Dec. 14.The Trump campaign and other Republicans continue to file lawsuits attempting to overturn election results on widespread fraud claims. But none of those lawsuits have proved any systematic fraud or consequential error in U.S. voting systems.Trump has also not been helped by the newly-conservative Supreme Court and the hundreds of federal judges that he's appointed. His repeated attempts to personally pressure election officials in Michigan and Georgia into delaying certification also amounted to nothing.Ultimately, Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20 after receiving 306 electoral college votes — the amount of votes Trump won in his 2016 win over Hillary Clinton, which he has referred to as a landslide win. 1610
