The Alba family in Williamsville, New York, are expecting their fourth baby and announced it the way they know best: with a catchy tune, funny lyrics, and an entertaining video.“You know we love to smile and make people happy," Danielle Alba told 7 Eyewitness News.The music video, set to the tune of "You're Welcome" from the Disney film Moana, hilariously describes how COVID-19 played a role in bringing their newest bundle of joy into the world."I canceled my vasectomy because of COVID-19," Sam sings on his backyard pool diving board. "I guess we have a souvenir from quarantine."This is Danielle and Sam's second music video. Their first video in 2017 welcomed their son Isaac with a parody of the song "Closer" by The Chainsmokers, which quickly racked up 11,000 views on YouTube.Their newest addition to their repertoire, which features their three children Emily, Rowan, and Isaac, is already becoming a sensation too. In just three days, the video had more than 2,000 views on Facebook.“Anytime somebody comments, 'this just made my day, it’s so wonderful,' it really makes us very happy. While fans are not allowed to attend any MLB games in the shortened 2020 season, the Oakland Athletics came up with a brilliant way to "bring in" fans.The team unveiled its "Coliseum Cutouts" program, where A's fans will get a chance to display the cardboard cutout of themselves during games.The team's staff will try to fill the stands with the cutouts. Prices range from to 9 for each cutout. If a cutout in the program's foul ball zone gets hit with a foul ball, the A's will send the ball to that fan.Proceeds from this program will benefit the team's charity partners.With every purchase of a cutout, the fan will also receive two complimentary tickets to the A's first exhibition game at the Coliseum during the 2021 season. With immigration restrictions in place and limits on foreign workers, programs like the J-1 visa teacher program have been put on hold. This has impacted both foreign teachers in the US and those who were scheduled to teach here.Melvin Inojosa and Stella Indiongco are both from the Philippines, working in the U.S. as part of the J-1 Visa teacher program. The program gives foreign educators the opportunity to teach in the U.S.“We have teachers in about 15 states right now” James Bell, the chief operating officer at Alliance Abroad, said.Alliance Abroad is one of many cultural exchange organizations connecting foreign teachers to U.S. schools and sponsoring them.“COVID has significantly impacted everything relating to J-1 teachers,” Bell said. “The president's proclamation on immigration essentially suspended J-1 teachers into coming into the country. And I have upwards of 100 that should be here by now.”President Donald Trump announced an extension to a temporary ban on foreign workers back in June. Based on immigration service data, the number of people affected was estimated at 500,000 people. The exact number of teachers impacted is unclear.The restrictions only apply to new workers coming to the U.S. For current workers, it means something else.“My close friend...is supposed to go back home because it's the end of her fifth year,” Indiongco said. “But because of the pandemic and shortage of teachers and freeze hiring, her district actually let her stay and extend another year.”Some teachers with expiring contracts were asked to stay. Indiongco herself had already planned to be in the U.S. for two more years, but her summer plans were impacted.“I wasn't able to see my family at all this year,” she said. The same happened for Inojosa.“My hair is already long because I only get my haircut in the Philippines. Every summer...we go back to the Philippines,” Inojosa said.The purpose of the decades-old cultural exchange program is to introduce American students to other cultures -- something that has also been hindered due to COVID-19.“I use food to share my culture,” Inojosa said. “They said it’s kind of a bad timing to gather and eat together, so right now we are limited to our actions regarding sharing our culture.”“I wasn't able to do any cultural exchange activity at all,” Indiongco said.J-1 teachers are navigating a new challenge. A new way of teaching, away from their home country. Inojosa and Indiongco are both pivoting to online learning.Inojosa’s typically full classroom with projects decorating the walls and shelves, will look a little more empty this year. The future of teaching and the J-1 program remains largely unknown.“The immigration ban will be in play through the end of December,” Bell said. That date could change. Current teachers fear this could make the program less desirable moving forward.“Since all the J-1 visas are not processed at all, they're stuck because they have no work there. They have no work here because they cannot come anyway,” Indiongco said.“Some of my friends waited for a very long time to grab this opportunity to enjoy the J-1 program,” Inojosa said.“J-1 visa is like a bridge to our dreams, coming from a third world country. I hate to say it, but coming from a third world country, everything is kind of slow,” Indiongco said.Even with the changing climate, Indiongco and Inojosa are gearing up to teach their students in whatever form necessary.“If I'm called to do my job, I will definitely do it,” Inojosa said. 3516

  

With home-court advantage taken out of the equation this year because of COVID-19, the NBA playoffs look nothing like they once did. And on Wednesday, the season took yet another dramatic turn with at least one team boycotting the championships.The Milwaukee Bucks boycotted their game to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It raises the question: what does this mean for the current moment of racial reckoning the nation has found itself in?Dwight Lewis, an activist during the civil rights movement, says it's about more than one game or any sport in particular."Sometimes you have to do things to get attention and say, ‘I can’t take this anymore. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore,’" the now 72-year-old activist explained.For athletes and teams in the national spotlight, it's about using their platform to get the country to pay attention."If you don’t speak out now, what are people going to say about you? That’s what was great about what the Bucks did," he added.Professional athletes using their platforms to protest racial inequality is nothing new. The first time it happened was during the 1968 Olympics when two African American runners raised their fists during the national anthem to call attention to the civil rights campaign.Lewis says decades later professional athletes are still harnessing the power that comes with their position to help enact change and move the national dialogue on race forward."This is 2020. We’re no better. Racism is still as American as apple pie, unfortunately. So, what did we do to keep these people from not wanting to walk off the basketball court or the football field? When it comes to things like the economy or the military, the United States is considered among the strongest countries in the world.But when it comes to education, the U.S. isn’t making the grade, says Dr. Tanji Reed-Marshall with the Education Trust, a Washington D.C.-based group that aims to pinpoint and fix problems and inequities in education.Through nationwide research, Dr. Reed-Marshall found fixing our schools’ funding could be the ticket to better curriculums, improving classroom leadership and creating quality education in America."It's really important for us to understand how we think through where dollars go," says Dr. Reed-Marshall.Dr. Reed-Marshall says the billion in federal funding is not enough and isn’t going to the right places."In this country, zip code still tells the story about what you're likely to receive and the quality of it," says Dr. Reed-Marshall.Teacher Chrystal Miller stresses the notion that all areas aren’t created equal when it comes to getting a piece of the education pie. If she had to give education funding an overall grade, she says it’d be a D or an F.Miller came from a rural public school in Arkansas to the Washington Leadership Academy, a public charter in D.C. She says the difference in zip code is night vs day, and it shouldn’t be that way."Schools and students should be funded based on their need and not necessarily because you're at this zip code or you have this kind of family background or this kind of economic status,” Miller says. According to research by the Education Trust, students who live in lower income areas get about ,800 fewer tax dollars per student.Dr. Reed-Marshall says tax dollars drive education dollars. She believes there needs to be equal distribution of the tax dollars to raise the U.S. to the top of the ranks and in order to create an even and quality playing field, regardless of where students live. 1919
