DETROIT — Two Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers helped save a life Friday afternoon. The department says officer Ben Lasher was patrolling Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan when around 12:31 p.m. Michigan State Police notified him of a woman threatening to jump off the MacArthur Bridge. "She was very upset," Lasher said. "She was crying. She was looking over her shoulder at the river. I was quite concerned because she didn't want me to come across the barricade."At the scene, Lasher witnessed the woman crying while standing next to the guard rail of the bridge. “She asked me to stay by my patrol truck at first,” Lasher said. “I was able to talk to her and find out her name."Lasher continued talking with the woman, while officer Steven Converse — who was also patrolling Belle Isle — arrived to the scene. "The bridge isn't very tall but the cold water, the body won't accept," Lasher said. "You won't do well in that environment very long."Converse approached where the woman and Lasher were standing and helped convince her to go with them to Lasher's patrol truck and seek professional help. After several minutes, the woman agreed, and the officers helped her climb over the barricade and into the patrol truck for safety."Holiday seasons are hard," said Lasher. "A lot of people have strong feelings, good or bad, and this young lady was having a hard time. And I was able to be in the right place at the right time."What helped, in part, was the training these officers receive for these types of situations.“Part of what conservation officers are taught is to engage in conversation with the suicidal person and to ask what has happened that has brought them to this point of suicide,” said Michael Comer, a contract police psychologist for the DNR Law Enforcement Division. “COs listen to the person's story, establish a rapport and demonstrate that they care about the suicidal person. They have been taught that they will not be able to change the person's mind until they first understand the person's story and despair.”The woman was taken to a local hospital for a check-up. According to the DNR, the scene was cleared around 1:01 p.m., exactly 30 minutes after officer Lasher received the original call. "There's hope for tomorrow," Lasher said he told the woman. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- Another shark sighting in Del Mar prompted lifeguards to leave in place signs warning swimmers to enter the water at their own risk. According to lifeguards, the five-foot-long shark was spotted at 1 p.m. off 15th street as crews patrolled the area in a boat. Lifeguards say the advisory signs will be taken down in 24 hours unless any more sharks are spotted in the area. The sighting marks the fourth day in a row a shark has been spotted in the area. Research biologists say if a shark is under six feet, they are juveniles and eat smaller fish, posing no threat to people. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Heidi Dewar, Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center said. DEL MAR, San Diego (KGTV)— Dozens of people gathered in front of the Del Mar Fairgrounds Saturday to protest a popular gun show.The weekend after yet another mass school shooting in Santa Fe Texas, the Del Mar Fairgrounds is hosting the Crossroads of the West Gun show. The show has been in Del Mar for many years.While show-goers drove into the parking lot, protestors yelled into the megaphone, “Stop the bloodshed. Close the Gunshow!”Del Mar Mayor, Dwight Worden joined protestors. “Why are we doing this when the community doesn’t want it?“ he asked. Worden has been credited for updating local zoning ordinances, which now ban gun shops, gun shows, or firing weapons in the city of Del Mar.But despite the name, the Del Mar Fairgrounds is owned by the state, so city zoning rules do not apply.It is governed by a Fair Board, which chooses what events they host a year in advance.“Were doing is this kind of demonstration of community concern and we’re working with the Fair Board and state legislature to see if we can change the rules and if not eliminate the gunshots, at least cut back the number,” Mayor Worden said. 10News was filming the protest, when an unrelated cyclist found an in-tact bullet being run over by cars on Via De La Valle.“It’s not a war zone.
