(KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Thursday that it plans to reopen August 3.According to the district, only distance or virtual learning will be available on August 3. No on campus instruction will be available.On August 28, the district will transition to "Phase 1" where 10 percent of students will be allowed on campus at any given time.As public health orders permit, the campus will move into phase two, where 20 percent of students will be allowed on campus. Phase three will see 50 percent or more of students on campus plus "some activities." CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista could be the next city to make outdoor dining easier for several restaurants.The city says it’s established a free permitting process for Third Avenue businesses, between E and G Streets, to move indoor operations outside amid a new round of coronavirus-related closures across the state.The businesses will be allowed to expand into the public right-of-way, giving them the option to create a large dining area while adhering to social distancing measures.“This will provide the businesses outdoor options using tables and canopies while having social distancing and queuing areas for sidewalk cafes and curb cafes. Businesses on Third Avenue would be able to create a larger outdoor dining experience as public health mandates currently have indoor dining closed,” a city release stated.The city also approved a temporary closure of Third Avenue on the weekends, between E and G St., through January 2021 for businesses to expand outdoor dining. This plan would have to be approved by the Third Avenue Village Association to go into effect, the city says.This week, the city also approved a .5 million grant for small businesses to be reimbursed for the costs of business interruptions due to pandemic closures. The grant, called Chula Vista CARES, is funded through the federal CARES Act funds.For-profit businesses located in commercial or industrial space in the city, with ten or fewer employees, and who were required to closed due to COVID-19 can apply between July 20, at 7 a.m. and July 24, at 7 p.m. for a portion of the grant. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Pastor Art Hodges stood on the steps of Chula Vista City Hall Wednesday, surrounded by about 50 people of faith. "Hear our prayer. Forgive our sin," Hodges said during the group prayer.The people were rallying against a program that calls for drag queens to read to children. Drag Queen Story Hour is scheduled to start Tuesday at the Chula Vista Civic Center Library. At the rally, those opposing the program said it would harm a child's growth and development. They also demanded public hearings."If there are parents that want drag queens to come read books to their children, they have that right. They're the parents, we're not protesting their right," said Hodges. "But they should do that privately, on their own time, in their own place, on their own dollar."Supporters say the program promotes tolerance and acceptance. Chula Vista Mayor Mary Salas called it "preposterous" to have a City Council vote for a one-hour reading program, which she said would not be canceled. "The City of Chula Vista is proud to celebrate the diversity of our community in all of our programs," Salas said in a statement. "The purpose of this event is to encourage children to use their imagination and creativity and most importantly to read."The tone of Wednesday's rally was much different than one held last week, in which tempers flared from the start. "I think that it really helps those children who may be questioning, an opportunity to see that there are options and that it's okay," Rudd said.
