UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, Xue Hanqin, was elected judge of the International Court of Justice here Tuesday.Xue, a member of the International Law Commission, was elected by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council in separate voting.Xue won all 15 votes in the Security Council on Tuesday morning, Claude Heller, the Mexican UN ambassador who holds the rotating Security Council presidency for June, announced after the 15- nation Council cast the secret ballots.Heller, at the open Council meeting, also read a letter from the president of the General Assembly, Ali Treki, who said that Xue won a majority of votes in the 192-nation UN body.Xue "was elected member of the International Court of Justice," Heller said. The election was conducted under the relevant Security Council resolution to fill the vacancy after Judge Shi Jiuyong, a Chinese, resigned on May 28.She is the only female among the 15 judges of the International Court of Justice, and the third Chinese to serve on the Court.Xue told reporters here that she thanked all those who voted for her and said that she will carry out her duty under the UN Charter and the Statute of the Court.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Since the first Group of 20 (G20) Summit in November 2008, the attention China has been getting has shifted from that of a turn-round-to, to that of a look-up-to, analysts said. Two years ago, almost all developed economies turned round to look at what actions China took to cope with the financial crisis. Now in the midst of a uneven global recovery, China has become one being looked up to by developing and developed economies for its leading if not exemplary roles. As the curtain is about to rise at the upcoming fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, China and the crucial roles she is playing once again draws the world's attention.A STEADY STABILIZER IN GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTPrior to the first G20 summit, China has since been managing to sustain a rather fast growth rate while taking an active part in orchestrating with other economies, developed and developing alike, to push for a global recovery through reformed and renewed financial and economic mechanisms.Despite the fact it is still a developing country itself, China alone has contributed toward half of the global GNP growth in the time of crises.Amidst downslides of the United States, eurozone and Japan, China not only curbed the domino ripple in the country with a bolder-than-predicted stimulus package but also succeeded in effecting a lead in the recovery. It is its early lead off the blocks that is now being more than looked at by others.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, soon to host the fourth G20 Summit, has described what China has done as a contribution to the global recovery and a great assistance to the international community in its crisis management.Takashi Sekiyama, a senior researcher from Japan's Meiji University and with the Tokyo Consortium, has rated China's contribution to the global economic development during this hard period as the "biggest."

URUMQI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- China sent two chartered aircraft carrying 26 tonnes of new relief materials to Kyrgyzstan early Monday to help refugees who suffered shortages of supplies after violent ethnic clashes this month. The two China Southern Airlines Boeing 757 cargo aircraft brought the materials to the southern Kyrgyzstan city of Osh from Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a spokesman with the carrier's Xinjiang Branch said. The aid materials worth 3 million yuan (440,000 U.S. dollars) include rice, oil, biscuits, black tea, milk powder, blankets, clothes, stationary and sanitary materials, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in a press release."China hopes the aid will help Kyrgyz authorities to resettle the refugees," Qin said.China Southern Airlines, one of the country's leading carriers, has been heavily involved in the evacuation of Chinese nationals and transportation of relief supplies after clashes broke out between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in Osh in mid-June.The clashes later spread to the region of Jalalabad, leaving 210 people dead and 2,100 injured.Since June 15, China has sent charter planes to ship altogether 80 tonnes of relief supplies, worth 11 million yuan, to Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Uzbekistan which was flooded with Kyrgyz refugees after the clashes, according to China Southern Airlines.

YICHUN, Heilongjiang, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- The government of Yichun, a city in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, has corrected Tuesday night's plane crash death toll to 42, saying one dead body that was torn apart in the disaster was formerly counted as two.A local publicity official said earlier on that 43 dead bodies were retrieved.According to the death roll released by the city government, the dead were aged roughly from 12 to 55, calculated from their birth dates indicated in their ID numbers.
