President Donald Trump railed against the Iran nuclear deal Tuesday, calling the Obama administration-negotiated deal as "insane" and "ridiculous" while seated next to French President Emmanuel Macron in the Oval Office. The outburst proved that a dinner of Dover sole and a glitzy military welcome could not paper over the two leaders' differences as they begin intensive talks on Iran and Syria.Trump offered scant assurances to Macron that he was reconsidering his pledge to exit the agreement."People know my views on the Iran deal," Trump said. "It was a terrible teal. It should have never been made."It was an auspicious start to Trump's inaugural state visit, which has been in the works for months. Earlier in the day, the two men put forward an elaborate show of friendship on the South Lawn, reviewing cordons of troops in formation and recalling the long history between the US and France. But moments later, Trump was putting to rest any notion he might be swayed on the Iran deal, which Macron hopes to salvage, perhaps by altering its terms."Iran seems to be behind everywhere there is a problem," Trump said in the Oval Office. "They're testing missiles. What is that all about?""What kind of a deal is this where it wasn't even discussed?" he added. 1272

President Donald Trump grew irritated with his top military brass and national security team on Tuesday when they advised him an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Syria would be unwise and could not provide a timeline for when American forces could exit, people familiar with the matter said.In a sometimes-tense meeting of his national security team, Trump complained at length about the amount of American money being spent in the region, which he said had produced nothing for the US in return, according to senior administration officials. And he continued to question why other countries in the region -- particularly the wealthy Persian Gulf nations -- haven't stepped in. 700

President Donald Trump criticized the separation of children and parents at the US border on Saturday, despite the fact that his own administration has supported a policy that could lead to an uptick in separating families."Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there (sic) parents once they cross the Border into the U.S.," the President tweeted on Saturday.CNN has reported that the Trump administration has made a decision?to refer anyone caught crossing the border illegally for federal prosecution. That policy may result in more parents and children being separated at the border.Attorney General Jeff Sessions said earlier this month, "if you cross the border unlawfully ... we will prosecute you," adding, "If you're smuggling a child, then we're going to prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you, probably, as required by law. If you don't want your child separated, then don't bring them across the border illegally." 1011

President Donald Trump is considering former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to replace fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions, sources familiar with the matter said.Trump fired Sessions on Wednesday without immediately naming a replacement, instead installing Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general.Christie, a former US attorney, could face similar calls to the ones Sessions faced to recuse himself from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation given his role as a prominent 2016 campaign surrogate for Trump. Christie was initially considered as a contender for the attorney general position during the transition.Bondi could face significant hurdles to confirmation over the controversy surrounding a ,000 gift she received from Trump's foundation during her 2016 re-election campaign."There are many people in contention for that position just because there are many qualified people who would like to do it," Kellyanne Conway told reporters at the White House on Thursday.Neither Christie, Bondi nor the White House immediately responded to a request for comment. 1153

President Donald Trump called Attorney General Jeff Sessions an "idiot" to his face and said he should resign in May, The New York Times reported Thursday.Sessions, an advocate for hardline policies on immigration and criminal justice, ultimately stayed on despite the humiliating Oval Office session with Trump, the Times reported, citing current and former administration officials as well as others briefed.Trump berated Sessions, the Times said, during a May 17 meeting with his top advisers to consider replacements for former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump had fired earlier that month. During the meeting, White House counsel Don McGahn received a call from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, where he learned Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel for the investigation into potential coordination between Trump's associates and Russia to influence the 2016 election. The Times report said Trump lashed out in response to that news.A source told CNN in June that Sessions offered to resign following a series of heated exchanges with the President. At the time, the White House declined to say Trump had confidence in Sessions. The Justice Department declined Thursday to comment on the Times' story. The Times said Trump did not accept Sessions' resignation because he was advised it would create more problems for him, given he had already fired Comey and national security adviser Michael Flynn.Trump has publicly blamed Sessions for the appointment of the special counsel. In July, the President went as far as saying he would not have chosen Sessions to be the attorney general had he known Sessions would recuse from matters related to the campaign. Trump called the move "very unfair to the President."Trump continued to rebuke Sessions in public, including referring to the attorney general on Twitter as "beleaguered." 1922
