It started in New York, but today the group "Survivor Corps" is reaching thousands across the country.Long Island resident Diana Berrent created the group after testing positive for COVID-19 back in March."I wasn't the very first person to get COVID in my county, but I was among the first and at a point where we knew very little about the virus," said Berrent. "And with that came both a responsibility and this incredible opportunity to really change the shape of the future of science and the understanding of this virus through us, through survivors who have antibodies in our blood."On the Survivor Corps website, COVID-19 survivors can connect with research institutions across the country so their blood or convalescent plasma can be used to find a vaccine or treatment."I have now donated eight times, which is the full allotted times I was allowed to at the New York Blood Center," Barrent said. "But every one of those donations can save three to four lives."Her experience has inspired thousands on the Survivor Corps Facebook page to do the same. Like Tracy Eisen, a nurse living in North Phoenix who tested positive for the virus in April. She first joined the group to find support."It did feel at the time that there was a stigma. A lot of people were testing positive but we weren't seeing the numbers in Arizona that we're seeing now," Eisen said. "I went in and immediately posted and got so much support. Strangers really came to my aid."Now that she has recovered, Eisen said she has donated plasma once a week since May."My hope is that I'm helping to save some lives," she said.But many in the group, like Glendale resident Lotus Moreno, are still fighting."I was shocked to hear about how many people who have had it early on and are dealing with what everyone's basically been calling a relapse, because we really don't know what it is," she said.Moreno said she had COVID-like symptoms in February but tests weren't available at the time. She said she tested positive for the antibodies in April, which according to the Centers for Disease Control, indicates she was likely infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 at some point in the past.But three weeks ago, she says her COVID-like symptoms returned. She tested negative for the virus, but says her doctor believes it may be a false negative or post-COVID issues.She says the group is filled with people across the country who share similar stories."To be able to go in and talk to people who are going through it, just a complete mindset change to where you don't feel so isolated and you feel validated because that's very easy to be dismissed," Moreno said.Berrent says they are not medical professionals, but they have been bringing in professionals to join them on Facebook Live videos as an educational tool for members to learn and ask questions."We serve as a great resource for them to come lurk and let them see what people are talking about so they know what their studies should involve," Berrent said. Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of death of 26 teenage girls whose bodies were recovered in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday.The girls, aged 14-18, are believed to have been migrants from Niger and Nigeria who had embarked on the treacherous route to Europe from Libya over the weekend.Lorena Ciccotti, Salerno's head of police, told CNN that autopsies would be carried out on Tuesday and that coroners would be investigating whether the girls had been tortured or sexually abused.Their bodies were found close to a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunk when rescuers arrived, Ciccotti said. Aid workers had described a grim scene: survivors hanging onto the remains of the vessel as the girls' bodies floated nearby.Their rescue was one of four separate rescue operations carried out in the Mediterranean over the weekend. In total, 400 people were brought aboard the Spanish vessel Cantabria before disembarking at the Italian port town of Salerno.Among them were 90 women and 52 minors, including a week-old-baby, authorities said.Libya is a well-known jumping-off point for migrants seeking refuge on European shores. Many from sub-Saharan Africa, are fleeing war and persecution; others from impoverished nations in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia have made the treacherous journey in search of better economic opportunities.The North African country is a hotbed for human traffickers, whose network of smuggling operations have gone widely unchecked due to Libya's lack of effective central governance.On Monday, Italian police arrested two men, an Egyptian and a Libyan accused with human smuggling. The men are not believed to be connected to the boat that was transporting the teenage girls.Since the start of this year, 2,839 migrants have died on the central Mediterranean route, according to the International Organization for Migration. 150,982 migrants have reached European shores, of which around 74% are Italian arrivals.In August, Italy deployed two military ships to Libya, offering training to the Libyan Tripoli Coast Guard following an agreement signed between the Italian Interior Minister, the Tripoli government and various mayors of Libyan villages to fight human trafficking. 2260

Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke signed an order Friday morning aiming to expand access for hunters and fishers to public lands and monuments.In what is being described as an "expansive" secretarial order, Zinke's rule would ultimately allow broader access across the board to hunters and fishers on public lands managed by the Interior Department, according to the order.A section of the order also amends the national monument management plan to include or expand hunting and fishing opportunities to the "extent practicable under the law."The order cites a 2007 executive order from President George W. Bush to "facilitate the expansion and enhancement of hunting opportunities and the management of game species and their habitat." It directs agencies to to create a report and plan to streamline how best to enhance and expand access to hunting and fishing on public lands.The Interior Department oversees national parks, wildlife refuges and other federal lands.The secretarial order also aims to expand educational outreach for hunting and fishing to "under served" communities such as minorities and veterans as well as increase volunteer access to federal lands."Today's secretarial order is the latest example of how the Trump administration is actively moving to support hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation on public lands," Zinke said in a statement."Hunting and fishing is a cornerstone of the American tradition and hunters and fishers of America are the backbone of land and wildlife conservation," he said.Interior said Obama administration policies were too restrictive."Through management plans made under the previous administration, which did not appreciate access to hunting and target shooting like this administration does, access and usage has been restricted," said Interior spokeswoman Heather Swift.Zinke's rule will not have to go through a formal rule-making process.It is the second major action from Interior in the last few weeks.In August, Zinke recommended shrinking the boundaries of a handful of national monuments, but stopped short of suggesting the elimination of any federal designations following a review ordered by President Donald Trump.At Trump's direction, Zinke earlier this year launched a review of 27 national monuments, a controversial move that could undo protections for millions of acres of federal lands, as well as limits on oil and gas or other energy production.
