BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- China will "vigorously" expand its imports of key products as the nation strives to cut its trade surplus amid growing protectionism against the world's largest exporter, a senior Chinese trade official said on Monday."We will especially encourage imports of products the nation is short of, especially advanced technology and key equipment," said Chong Quan, China's deputy international trade representative.Special attention will be paid to expanding imports from countries that China has a trade surplus with, he said at the China Import Forum organized by the Ministry of Commerce.Due to their domestic economic woes and political pressure, some developed countries, in particular the US, have accused China of piling up trade surpluses through policies such as an undervalued currency. This argument conveniently ignores other factors at play, such as their own export restrictions.Nonetheless, in the first six months of this year, US exports to China increased 35.7 percent year-on-year, 13 percentage points higher than its overall export growth, according to US figures.Despite the surge of its trade surplus in July, which stood at .7 billion, China will see the surplus drop dramatically for the year to about 0 billion, compared to 0 billion in 2009 and 0 billion in 2008, trade officials said. BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China has enacted 10 measures to prohibit better than average primary schools and junior high schools from charging "enrollment fees," or selling enrollment quotas, according to a statement posted on the website of the Ministry of Education on Monday.The statement reads, due to the difference in quality among schools, and a shortfall of excellent schools as compared to actual demand, the problem of "enrollment fees" has been reported, particularly in big cities.This is a particular problem in China, where parents pay to secure seats for their children in key schools if their children do not score high enough on entrance exams.The measures include forbidding schools from selling extra enrollment quotas in whatever names or methods, obliging schools to publicly disclose enrollment information, improving sub-quality schools, supporting private schools to enrich superior education resources, carrying out supervision and others regulations.

CHENGDU, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese government official said Wednesday that major geological disasters and densely-populated regions would be the two main areas to monitor in the nation's efforts to guard against losses caused by such disasters.In the first 10 months of 2010, 2,909 people were dead or missing following over 30,000 recorded geological disasters, Xu Shaoshi, the Minister of Land and Resources, said at a meeting held Wednesday in Chengdu, capital city of southwestern Sichuan Province.Further, the number of people dead or missing during this period was five times higher than in the same period last year, said Xu.However, the majority of these victims, about 2,000 people, were killed or went missing after five major mud and rock slides which struck areas in west China's Guizhou, Gansu, and Yunnan provinces, Xu said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province this past August, leaving 1,510 dead and 255 others missing."Our focus in loss prevention and control in the future will be to closely watch the major geological disasters and the areas with high human concentrations," said Xu.Xu also urged local governments to make specific plans regarding geological disaster prevention, improve the assessment and pre-cautionary monitoring mechanism, and beef up rescue and response systems in the event of an emergency.
