SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City officials say 55 people at the San Diego Convention Center's emergency homeless shelter have tested positive for COVID-19, as cases surge around the country.The individuals who tested positive include those suffering from homelessness and staff at the center, according to the City of San Diego.Those homeless individuals who tested positive will be moved to a local hotel managed by the county for public health use. Staff who tested positive have been notified and advised to stay home. Positive individuals will be kept off-site until it is deemed safe for them to return.The county has made testing available to all staff and residents at the center to halt any further spread and is working to determine if there is an impact to others at the Convention Center.Prior to this round of testing, there had been less than 30 positive tests at the Convention Center over the last nine months, the city says.The city says that individuals utilizing the Convention Center and staff have a daily temperature check and verbal questionnaire and must wear a face covering, and staff clean and sanitize surfaces and hands frequently.The new positive cases as COVID-19 cases surge across the county and state. According to CHP, the shooting happened on I-8 near Waring Road around 8:30 p.m. CHP says an unknown vehicle began firing rounds at the victim. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Armed private security guards - and others with nonlethal ways to defend themselves - could soon patrol iconic San Diego locations like Balboa Park and the downtown Central Library.The city of San Diego is officially seeking proposals from security firms that would authorize armed or enhanced safety personnel outside more than 50 places, including community parks, skate parks, and library branches. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments.
