(KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. I was just the person behind them that decided to help," said Wetter.Wetter credits his Marine Corps training, which has taught him how to react to fast-developing situations.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the Hurley family with the purchase of a new car. 2070

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — A verbal confrontation between a North County father and son turned violent after a knife was involved, leading to a stabbing.A man and his son living in the 1100 block of Saxony Rd. got into an argument at about 4:30 p.m. Friday, the San Diego Sheriff's Department said. The argument soon turned into a violent confrontation though, when one of the son reportedly stabbed his father, according to City News Service.The father was taken to a nearby hospital with a single, non-life threatening stab wound.Deputies were unable to find the man's son though, after searching the nearby area using K-9 officers and a SDSO helicopter.SDSO was still trying to locate the suspect Saturday. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- One week after a training accident that ended in the death of racehorse Bobby Abu Dhabi, Victor Espinoza is opening up about his recovery.Espinoza, a Hall of Fame jockey, suffered a fractured vertebra when he was thrown from the horse after it went into apparent cardiac arrest in Del Mar. The four-year-old horse died.RELATED: Injured jockey Victor Espinoza to miss rest of Del Mar meet"I was just working my normal routine and then just...something just happens," Espinoza said. "So it was a bit of a different accident than what (I've had) over the years." The 46-year-old jockey remembers thinking that he might be paralyzed after the July 22 fall. He said his body was numb, and he could only move his right arm. "The first time I ever cry, (was) when I first started moving my right leg, when I got on the ambulance and then by the time I got to the hospital, I started moving my left leg." Scans showed that Espinoza fractured his C3 vertebrae in the accident and had damage to his cerebral artery. Doctors told him that he got lucky.  Espinoza will be in a neck brace for six weeks. He told 10News his goal is to make a full recovery - but right now there is no guarantee that will happen."I can't move my neck at all, and I wear (the brace) and it's hard for me to balance because I can't see down," he said, noting that he still has numbness in his left arm. Right now, it is too soon to know if he will be able to return to racing - a sport in which he earned a Triple Crown on American Pharoah in 2015.  He's also a three time Kentucky Derby winner.When asked if he would be scared to race again he said, " I can't predict the future, how I'm going to feel at that moment."  1807

Families still returning home to San Diego after surviving the deadly earthquake in Mexico City.Jorge Jiron and his wife are back in the US after nearly 24 hours of chaos. "when it hit it started shaking real bad," he said. He was in a building that sits on the side of a canyon nearly 12 floors up. Suddenly, everything started to move. "\We were close to the exit, on your way out it is shaking hard but you're really paying attention to everybody and their instructions to get out," said Jiron. "Then, that's when you realize everything is shaking, the windows are shaking the hard, the electric poles are really moving, then you see people that are nervous."The 7.1 magnitude quake was crumbling buildings, shattering windows and sending debris flying through the air. "You're walking you're moving, so you don't realize how bad it is until you're actually standing in one place and you see everything moving around you. When you realize it's already stopped, it takes seconds."They were supposed to fly back to the US Tuesday night, but there was no way out. "The main road that goes to the airport was completely packed with cars. A 30-minute drive would have been 5 or 6 hours," said Jiron.  1241

Even as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on and the Trump administration continues to contest the results of the 2020 presidential election, the White House plans to hold its annual turkey pardoning ceremony next week, according to CNN and Fox News.President Donald Trump will reportedly take part in the annual tradition on Tuesday afternoon when he will issue a formal pardon to two Iowa turkeys - Corn and Cob.The public can vote for which turkey they'd like to see President Trump pardon and receive the title National Thanksgiving Turkey.According to The White House's Facebook page, Corn and Cob will stay at The Willard until the annual White House Turkey Pardon on Tuesday.In the past, the Turkey Pardoning Ceremony at the White House has drawn a crowd of spectators at the Rose Garden. It's unclear if the 2020 ceremony will be held in front of spectators.Trump has largely laid low since Election Day. He's held just three on-camera events since Nov. 3, one of which was a Veteran's Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, at which he did not address reporters. According to CNN, outside of playing a few rounds of golf on the weekends, Trump has not left the White House in several weeks.Following Tuesday's ceremony, the turkeys will live out their lives at Iowa State University. Last year, Trump pardoned two turkeys, "Bread" and "Butter," both of whom were sent to live at Virginia Tech following the ceremony.Legend has it that the first president to issue a pardon to a turkey was Abraham Lincoln, who did so at the request of his son.
