BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China will prioritize the development of six types of new materials in its new material industry over the next five years, the China Securities Journal said on Wednesday.The report cited an insider, who noted that the country's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) for the new material industry will come out in September, in which the government will launch key projects to support the development of the six materials.The six materials will be high-strength light alloy, advanced iron and steel, carbon fiber composite, new power battery material, function coated material, and rare earth function material, according to the report.The plan states each of the six sub industries will form a sizable industrial scale, with the industry's total output value to hit trillions of yuan by the end of 2015, and the self-supply rate to reach 70 percent during the period, the report said.Meanwhile, the government will also foster the development of materials in sectors such as green building material and the biomedical industry over the next five years, it added.

BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The amount of space junks floating in Earth's orbit has reached a critical level, warned scientists.The future space missions may become too dangerous to fly for a risk of colliding with space junks, said a report released recently by the U.S. National Research Council (NRC).The kinds of space junks range from huge, the report said, there are thousands of discarded satellites and rocket boosters and countless tiny pieces of daily gabages from space missions.The debris are traveling in orbit at 17,500mph, at such a speed even a tiny clash can destroy a spacecraft.The NRC recommended that NASA should launch a plan to clean up the floating debris and called on other major space nations' cooperation."The current space environment is growing increasingly hazardous to spacecraft and astronauts," said Kessler, an ex-NASA researcher, "NASA needs to determine the best path forward for tackling the multifaceted problems caused by meteoroids and orbital debris that put human and robotic space operations at risk."

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday announced a recall on a drug infusion pump of Medtronic, the Associated Press reported.The recalled drug pump was called "SynchroMed II", including models of 8637-20 and 8637-40, distributed between 2004 and July 2011.Drug infusion pump was used to deliver the drugs for patients to treat chronic pain, spasms as well as other conditions.The pumps' malfunction could put patients in the risk of either recurrent or withdrawal symptoms, which could be life-threatening, FDA warned.There were 55 reported cases and one death related to the drug withdrawal, among a total 139,653 SynchroMed II pump implants worldwide, FDA notified.The problem was due to a film within the pump's battery that could stop the therapy, FDA said.Medtronic, the U.S. medical technology company based in Minneapolis, is not recommending patients to remove the pumps, but instead, encourage patients to contact their doctor if they hear the device alarm.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Lenovo Group, China's largest PC maker, said it aims to become the world's second-largest PC provider by the end of this year, China Daily reported Friday.The PC maker will take aggressive action to expand in the international PC market left by its competitors because of strategy adjustment, the English newspaper quoted Liu Chuanzhi, the board chairman of Lenovo, as saying.A few weeks ago, the world's biggest PC maker Hewlett-Packard Corp. said it will spin off its PC sector. Apple Inc's former CEO Steve Jobs resigned."The Chinese market is the starting point for Lenovo, but it won't be the only place Lenovo should put emphasis on. We will set up a more active strategy for expanding in overseas markets," Liu said.The PC maker has long been focusing on the global market. It purchased the PC division of the IBM Corp. a few years ago. In January, it announced a 175-million-U.S.-dollar joint venture with Japan's NEC Corp. BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- A controlled trial has found that Chinese herbal medicine decoction maxingshigan-yinqiaosan has a similar efficacy to oseltamivir in reducing time to fever resolution in people suffering mild H1N1 influenza virus infections.Carried out by a group of Chinese researchers, headed by Prof. Wang Chen with Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital under the Capital Medical University, the study was published by the famous internal medicine journal Ann Intern Med on Tuesday.Participants of the trial were 410 young adults aged 15 to 59 years with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 influenza.The researchers concluded that both active intervention, alone and in combination, were effective in reducing time to fever resolution in young adults with H1N1 flu, and therefore suggest that maxingshigan-yinqiaosan may be an alternative to oseltamivir.
