Australian scientists are searching for the remnants of a meteor which burned spectacularly across the sky in Perth Tuesday night. The unusual phenomenon was caught on camera by multiple spectators, and described as a "fireball" on social media.Curtin University professor Phil Bland told CNN it was "almost certainly" a chunk of asteroid coming through the atmosphere, an event which he said occurs only a couple of times a year. 437

Attendance at San Diego Padres home games is on pace to finish more than 11 percent higher than the turnout for 2018. Through 65 home games, the team has drawn an average 30,200 fans per game. In 2018, the Padres drew an average 26,967 fans to games at Petco Park. The team made a splash in the offseason by signing superstar third baseman Manny Machado to a 0 million contract. Plus, excitement surrounding rookie Fernando Tatis Jr., now injured, has helped to draw fans. The Padres, still below .500, have also won 10 more games at this point in the season than they had at the same time last year. Olivia Millay, a server at Social Tap, which is next to Petco Park, says the increased attendance has helped business. "People are getting a lot more excited," she said. "I feel like last year there was almost more people cheering for the other team that would come here. Now you're seeing a lot more Padres jerseys. You've got Machado, Tatis, ya know?"But the uptick in attendance hasn't helped all business equally. There are still multiple shuttered storefronts near Petco Park, including the site of what used to be Tilted Kilt on 10th Avenue. Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe de L'Opera, across from Petco Park, said high rents hurt. Plus, she pointed to issues with the area's homeless population that can keep customers away. "In the morning everyday we have to remove transients that are sleeping, along with many other issues," she said. Ahmed said the increased attendance has helped a bit, but can only do so much. 1531

Back to school time usually means it's time for a new backpack.Nowadays there are tons of choices in how kids can lug around their belongings. Rolling backpacks, shoulder sling options, or the traditional two-strap pack. But which one is right for them? Will it support their back? Stay together through the school year? Does it look good? These are some of the questions parents grapple with in the middle of shopping aisles.A study by UC San Diego researchers found that children commonly carry about 10 to 20 percent of their body weight in backpacks, which is also the limit recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.UCSD researchers tested the correlation between backpack weight and a child's back pain. They tested a group of 8 children and measured spinal pressure at three different amounts of backpack weight meant to mimic 10, 20, and 30 percent of their weight. They found that as the weight of the backpack load increases, back pain in children increases and spinal disc height shrinks as lumbar asymmetry grows.Which brings us back to the original question: How do you make sure a backpack is right for a child? A graphic from the folks at RetailMeNot have outlined how a backpack should rest on a child:Safety strapsBackpack straps are more important than kids think. Shoulder straps should be wide and padded to help distribute the pack's weight evenly, according to the website Healthy Children. Abdominal straps also help distribute weight across the waist, hips, and back. It's also recommended not to wear backpacks on only one shoulder, which shifts all that weight and leads to neck and back pain.Wearing it rightThe top of a backpack should sit one to two inches below the top of the shoulders. Also, the pack should not sit more than four inches below the waistline. The bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back.Preventing injury on the goWhile at school, its important for kids to be careful while lugging around their backpack. If possible, students should stop by their lockers often to unload any unneeded gear from their backpack. If bending down, kids should use both of their knees while wearing a backpack and not bend at the waist.Learning back-strengthening exercises can also help build up muscles primarily used while carrying weight.Consult a pediatrician if necessaryTalking with your child's doctor about back health is vital. Speak with your child as well about being vocal about back discomfort. And for parents, don't ignore complaints about back pain.If may also be worth speaking with school administrators about lightening the load of work carried around or buying separate textbooks to keep at home. 2740

Authorities say a seventh grader who died by suicide inside a northeast Ohio middle school bathroom last week planned to carry out an attack on the school.According to Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink, the Jackson Memorial Middle School student admired the Columbine shooters and had an eight-step plan to carry out an attack. The boy "intended to conduct a school shooting and harm others," Brink said. On Feb. 20, police responded to Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County after receiving a call about a student who had shot himself in the boy's bathroom.According to the medical examiner's office, the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.Security cameras captured the 13-year-old on video coming out of the restroom with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle he had brought to school under his clothes. The boy went back inside the restroom and shot himself, police said.Investigators said it doesn't appear the boy shared his plan with anyone else, and he did not really have a presence on social media.Case of 13-year-old boy who shot himself inside Jackson Memorial Middle School has been ruled a suicide, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner. ATLANTA — The funeral for the late civil rights icon and congressman John Lewis will be held Thursday at Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, which the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once led. Lewis’ family announced that the funeral will be private, but the public is invited to pay tribute over the coming days during a series of celebrations of Lewis’ life beginning Saturday in his hometown of Troy, Alabama. Ceremonies will also be held in Selma, Alabama, and his body will lie in state at the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery, the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta and the U.S. Capitol in Washington.Lewis, 80, died Friday after a six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He represented Georgia as a Congressman for more than 30 years, winning 17 elections. He also fought for Civil Rights for Black people in the 1960s, originally gaining notoriety as one of the 13 original "Freedom Riders." 914
