A new US government report delivers a dire warning about climate change and its devastating impacts, saying the economy could lose hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century. The federally mandated study was supposed to come out in December but was released by the Trump administration on Friday, at a time when many Americans are on a long holiday weekend, distracted by family and shopping.David Easterling, director of the Technical Support Unit at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, emphasized that there was "no external interference in the report's development." He added that the climate change the Earth is experiencing is unlike any other."The global average temperature is much higher and is rising more rapidly than anything modern civilization has experienced, and this warming trend can only be explained by human activities," Easterling said.Coming from the US Global Change Research Program, a team of 13 federal agencies, the Fourth National Climate Assessment was put together with the help of 1,000 people, including 300 leading scientists, roughly half from outside the government. It's the second of two volumes. The first, released in November 2017, concluded that there is "no convincing alternative explanation" for the changing climate other than "human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse gases."The report's findings run counter to President Donald Trump's consistent message that climate change is a hoax. On Wednesday, Trump tweeted, "Whatever happened to Global Warming?" as some Americans faced the coldest Thanksgiving in over a century. But the science explained in these and other federal government reports is clear: Climate change is not disproved by the extreme weather of one day or a week; it's demonstrated by long-term trends. Humans are living with the warmest temperatures in modern history. Even if the best-case scenario were to happen and greenhouse gas emissions were to drop to nothing, the world is on track to warm 1.1 degrees Fahrenheit. As of now, not a single G20 country is meeting climate targets, research shows.Without significant reductions in greenhouse emissions, the annual average global temperature could increase 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 Celsius) or more by the end of this century, compared with preindustrial temperatures, the report says. 2355

A second grand juror who was tasked with deciding which police officers involved in the shooting at Breonna Taylor's apartment that led to her death should be charged has come forward to criticize the process. In September, a grand jury charged one police officer with three counts of wanton endangerment for firing his gun at an apartment complex. No officer who fired their guns toward Taylor or her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, were charged in connection with Taylor's homicide. 489

A pair of major Disney-released blockbusters, "Black Panther" and the upcoming "Mary Poppins Returns," join "A Star is Born" and a mix of smaller movies in the American Film Institute's annual roster of the most outstanding achievements in film and television. The juried awards, voted on by industry executives and producers, journalists and academics, also recognized "BlacKkKlansman," "Eighth Grade," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "The Favourite," "First Reformed," "Green Book" and another box-office hit, "A Quiet Place," in the film category.Although left off the 10-best list, Netflix's "Roma," the Spanish-language entry from director Alfonso Cuarón, was chosen to receive a special award as "a work of excellence outside the Institute's criteria for American film." To be eligible, movies must have "significant creative and/or production elements from the United States."On the television side, a separate jury recognized four series from the FX network: "The Americans," "Atlanta," and two shows from producer Ryan Murphy, "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story" and "Pose."Other honorees were spread among various players, including HBO's "Barry" and "Succession," Netflix's "The Kominsky Method," Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," and AMC's "Better Call Saul." NBC's hit drama "This is Us" was the lone broadcast program to grace the list, while the most glaring oversights would be the past two Emmy winners for best drama, "Game of Thrones" and "The Handmaid's Tale."The AFI will honor the winners at a luncheon event in January. 1575

A potentially catastrophic Category 4 Hurricane Michael has made landfall as the strongest hurricane to hit the Florida Panhandle in recorded history, with its winds and storm surge wreaking havoc along the shore.Michael's extremely dangerous center crossed near Florida's Mexico Beach on Wednesday afternoon with sustained winds of 155 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.Photos: Hurricane Michael to slam US coastEarlier, Gov. Rick Scott called Michael "the worst storm that our Florida Panhandle has seen in a century."Streets were flooding in the Panhandle city of Apalachicola. In Panama City Beach, winds of about 100 mph furiously whipped the trees in the early afternoon as siding ripped from a building got caught against a fence.Earlier in that oceanside city, video from a meteorologist showed new construction collapsing in high winds.Among the concerns: Flash-flooding with heavy rain; life-threatening storm surges up to 14 feet high; and devastating winds, not just in the Panhandle, but southern Alabama and Georgia. 1044

A new campaign is bringing attention to an issue that hasn't been front and center since the pandemic started – missing children.“There has been a lot of awareness, a lot of things have changed, but regarding her case, unfortunately there's nothing,” said Jessica Nu?ez about her missing 15-year-old daughter, Alicia Navarro.Navarro, who has autism, was 14 when she vanished in the middle of the night last September from her home in Glendale, Arizona.Alicia played online games and her mother thinks she was lured away by someone she met online. They had even discussed the dangers in therapy.“And then she wrote me a letter where she sweared to me she was coming back, so that’s what has me very worried, because I know her intention was for her to come back and that’s why I won’t stop looking,” said Nu?ez. “I won’t stop looking until I get answers because it’s been so long.”In a new effort to bring attention to missing children like Alicia Navarro, their pictures will be featured on some gas station pump video screens. Alicia's picture will be up in Arizona. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is coordinating the effort featuring various different missing children's pictures in the states they disappeared from. Her mother wants people to know she looks young for her age and has a noticeable scar on her right knuckles.“People tend to forget so my goal is to continue sharing her story and having her image out there,” said Nu?ez.There's also a Facebook page, called "Finding Alicia," where you can share her picture. 1557
