(KGTV) - A heartbroken dog owner in Santee is hoping to warn others after coyotes attacked her dog while she was walking him on a leash.Presley, an eight-year-old Silky Terrier, was small with a big personality. "Just a loving dog and wild personality. He would always protect me," said Michelle Cimmarrusti.The instinct was on display around 5 a.m. Tuesday. On Palm Glen Drive, on the edge of her condo complex, Cimmarrusti was taking Presley out for a quick walk. Her retractable leash was stretched out about five feet. "On the sidewalk near a bush, I felt Presley tug. Thought he wanted to sniff a bush. That's when the two dogs came out," said Cimmarrusti.Cimmarrusti quickly realized they weren't dogs, but aggressive coyotes."Just horrifying. My brain just went numb at the time," said Cimmarrusti.The protective Presley barked and lunged. As she pulled frantically on Presley, the clasp on her collar broke, and Presley took off. Cimmarrusti says it was a blur, but Presley and the coyotes ended up in the street before disappearing into the complex."I kept screaming at the top of my lungs for his name," said Cimmarrusti.About ten minutes later, a neighbor found a bloodied Presley, who died in Cimmarrusti's arms on the way to the pet emergency clinic."I just couldn't get to him quick enough," she said, choking back tears.She has since learned another dog was killed by a coyote in the same area weeks ago. Experts say coyotes attacking a leashed dog is a sign they're getting more aggressive in an area and getting less afraid of humans, whether it's food scarcity or the unintentional feeding of coyotes."Please be cautious. If I can help one person and their dog, I'll be grateful. Keep them on a tighter leash. Don't let them far and keep aware of your surroundings," said Cimmarrusti. 1825

(KGTV) — San Diego Sheriff's deputies are investigating a possible threat made against West Hills High School late Monday.In a letter to parents, West Hills Principal Robin Ballarin said staff was made aware of the threat Monday concerning a student remark that referenced a possible act of violence.The 15-year-old student has been identified, school officials say.No weapon or written threats were found in connection with the student, deputies said.The remark was reportedly made during class at 10:30 a.m., according to deputies, who called the comment "generic." SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A photo of a Cal State San Marcos graduate is going viral. It shows 29-year-old Erica Alfaro in her cap and gown, standing with her parents, in the middle of a strawberry field in Carlsbad.Her educational journey was anything but easy. “I was a teenage mom,” Alfaro said. She was 15 and pregnant, and became a mother at 16. Alfaro said she dropped out of high school and was stuck in an abusive relationship.“My baby’s father forced me to sleep outside with my baby,” Alfaro said. “That is the night I decided to go back to school.”She left Fresno and returned home to Oceanside. It was then that she remembered a moment from when she was 13-years-old.“My mom took me to work with her in the tomato fields,” Alfaro said. “And I remember she told me, ‘This is our life. The only people who have a good life are the people who have a good education.’”Alfaro was born in Fresno but spent most of her elementary years in Tijuana, Mexico. When she was 13, she and her family moved to Oceanside. Her parents got jobs as farm workers. They never received a formal education. “They don’t know how to read or write,” Alfaro said. All the signs pointed toward her repeating that cycle. But Alfaro was not going to let that happen. “I did it for my son,” she said. Little Luis inspired her to finished high school through homeschool, and enroll in Junior College. The next step was Cal State San Marcos. Statistics show that only 2 percent of teen mothers finish college by the age of 30. But Alfaro pushed forward. “At first I thought I was being unrealistic, but I just started to keep going,” she said. But in 2012, Alfaro got a diagnosis that changed her life once again. “My son was diagnosed with cerebral palsy,” she said. The depression overcame her, and she dropped out of college. But again, she remembered that day at the tomato fields. “I had so many excuses to give up. But giving up was never an option,” Alfaro said. Five years later, she earned her bachelor's degree at CSU San Marcos. On Sunday, as if she has not accomplished enough, Alfaro will receive a Masters in Education from San Diego State University. She hopes to inspire students and her now 13-year-old son, to never give up. “My son represents a new generation,” Alfaro said. “He will have a better future. He will have more opportunities, and I will be there to tell him that it is possible. That he belongs. All those things I never heard myself.” 2454
