San Diego (KGTV)- A high school teen decided to use his passion for science and astronomy to create a virtual space camp. The teen hopes to spark the interest of kids around the county and beyond.Ryan Clairmont is a junior at Canyon Crest Academy High School. He says his interest in astronomy started at a young age.“I remember when I was 6 or 7 years old, I went to the Palomar observatory,” says Clairmont. “I was able to look through their 60-inch telescope at Jupiter and the moon. It was an eye-opening experience for me.”The teen had plans to participate in a bio-physics internship this summer, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.“At that point, I realized there must be a lot of other children in San Diego and across the country, whose in-person summer programs have been canceled for the summer.”That’s when Clairmont created Cosmoto, a free virtual space for kids.Each day kids will learn about a different space topic and participate in hands-on science experiments and activities. All of the materials for the activities are low-cost items you can find at home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two people escaped uninjured after a sailboat crashed into an Ocean Beach jetty, before the vessel itself was crushed by high surf.The 25-foot long boat collided into the North Channel jetty in Ocean Beach with the two individuals on board, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokeswoman Monica Mu?oz. San Diego Lifeguards used a personal water craft to reach the vessel and safely pull the two individuals after they were forced to jump from the boat. The boat was attempting to leave the jetty area when a large wave forced them to pull a U-turn. SAN DIEGO FORECAST: Wednesday's rains to strengthen heading into ThursdayWind caught the sails and instead sent the vessel back into the jetty, according to witnesses at the scene.Those two people were uninjured in the wreck though the sailboat was crushed by high surf and sunk within the channel's entrance, according to Mu?oz.The boat's owner is now responsible for making arrangements to tow the boat from the channel.RELATED: Where to get free sandbags to protect your home from floodingA storm system forecasted for San Diego County has brought high sets to local beaches Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In honor of Veterans Day, dozens of volunteers found a way to give back to current active duty military service members.The organization Waves of Appreciation packed thousands of "Appreciation bags" filled with snacks for service members traveling through San Diego during the holidays.Volunteers fill the bags assembly line style. This program started in 2011 when the founder of the event saw a military service member traveling alone during the holidays, exhausted and hungry. Since then volunteers have handed out more than 24,000 bags.Waves of Appreciation is looking for volunteers to pass out the goodie bags at Lindbergh Field in December in time for the holidays. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With Thanksgiving just days away, local health officials are seeing long lines at San Diego County COVID-19 test sites with many San Diegans hoping to get tested before the holiday.With the sudden surge of testing, some experts, such as UC San Diego Chief of Infectious Diseases Dr. Davey Smith, warn that getting a test is not enough to minimize the risk of spreading the coronavirus.“There’s a worrisome reason that people are planning to go visit their older relatives and they think they’re going to be 100 percent safe,” Smith said.Smith also said getting a test now could still give out a false negative result.“If I get tested now, it doesn't mean that I'm not infected, it just means that I'm not actively shedding the virus,” Smith told ABC 10News.On Monday, at San Diego International Airport, ABC 10News spoke to travelers who had the same thought.“I got tested about a week ago, just to make sure that everything is OK.
