BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) - Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said that China will firmly embrace green and low-carbon development ideals and step up efforts in saving resources and protecting the ecological environment.China will strive to transform its economic growth model in a bid to build an energy-saving and environmentally-friendly society, Li said Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development.He said China will promote development of the emerging industries of strategic importance, hi-tech industries and modern service industries, conduct technological innovation on traditional industries and continue efforts in eliminating backward production capacities to maintain a sustainable development.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (C), also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), attends the opening ceremony of the 2010 Annual General Meeting of the CCICED in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 10, 2010. Further, China will ramp up its efforts in sewage treatment and building clean energy facilities, and concentrate on solving prominent environmental problems that affects people's lives, Li said.He also urged protecting the nation' s major ecological conservation areas and facilitating biological diversity.Facing the climate change challenges, the international community should actively work together on the basis of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol and under the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities", and strive for a successful Cancun conference, Li said.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met here on Monday with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Both leaders reaffirmed the close and cooperative relationship shared by Singapore and China.Xi's visit caps a series of high level exchanges as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties. During the meeting, Xi said China and Singapore have increased mutual understanding and expanded cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations. He said the two countries have forged close cooperation in various areas, adding that Singapore is willing to further enhance cooperation with China in bilateral and multi-lateral areas.After the meeting, Lee and Xi witnessed the signing of the following three agreements: the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Heritage Board of the Republic of Singapore and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China on Museum Cooperation; the Agreement on the Details of Implementation between the National University of Singapore and Suzhou Municipal Government (Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee) on the Joint Establishment of the National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute; and the MOU on the Establishment of a Cooperative College by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city.At the invitation of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Xi arrived in Singapore on Sunday for a three-day official visit.

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- China vowed Wednesday that it would continue efforts to expand and upgrade its rural power grid networks in the next five years to meet the increasing demand.Safe, environmentally-friendly, and technologically-advanced rural power networks are expected to cover most of the nation's rural areas to ensure better electricity use for rural residents during the country's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to a statement issued after a State Council executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao.Full-fledged power networks are still beyond reach for some rural residents in China's central and western rural regions, despite government moves to expand rural networks beginning in 1998, the statement said.Relevant departments should step up efforts to improve power generation facilities for irrigation and farm produce processing to ensure power consumption of agriculture production, the statement said.Further, participants at the meeting also pledged to slash rural power prices.

  

BOGOTA, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Colombian Vice President Angelino Garzon on Tuesday met with visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong to discuss the development of relations between their two countries.Liu said the relations between China and Colombia had maintained a sound momentum of development since they forged diplomatic ties 30 years ago.Exchanges and cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, education, technology and culture had yielded rich fruit, and the two countries had maintained coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, Liu said.Both China and Colombia - two developing countries with extensive common interests - were shouldering responsibilities of economic development and improving people's livelihood, she said.China cherished the friendship with Colombia and wanted to join Colombia in advancing their friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation, Liu said.The Chinese state councilor also said exchanges and cooperation in the fields such as culture, education and technology had great potential for further development, which should be new spotlights in bilateral relations.She called for continued strengthening of technological and educational cooperation and expanding cultural exchanges.Garzon expressed his gratitude for the sympathy and condolences China had extended to Colombia over its severe floods.China-Colombia ties were developing well, and Colombia highly valued its relations with China, he said.Garzon also said the two countries had great potential in mutually beneficial cooperation, and Colombia was willing to expand cooperation with China in economy, technology, education and culture.Colombia firmly adhered to the one China policy, he said.After the meeting, Liu and Garzon attended a signing ceremony for cooperation agreements on education as well as science and technology.
