LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- One thing Ernie Togerson, VP for Teague Insurance, and his partner knew when COVID-19 hit, was they wanted to help."We were talking about it and said I really want to do something in the La Mesa community because we're in the La Mesa community." What they didn't know, was how long they'd be helping, for."When we were at 20 weeks the head nurse said 'I never have to worry about folks calling in sick Thursday nights because they know they're gonna get a meal'," Togerson said.23 weeks later, they're still giving free meals to Sharp Grossmont's Intensive Care Unit every Thursday at 8 P.M. on the dot. "We get a chance to talk to them and ask how it's going." COVID hit home for Togerson, his son's an ICU nurse in Michigan. "I told my son we want to do something he said 'bring them meals for the night shift because the day shift gets all the love, and the night shift gets the leftovers'."All of the meals they donate are from restaurants that Teague Insurance covers. While feeding nurses, they're also helping local restaurants, many hit hard from the pandemic. So far, Teague has given out over 300 meals for frontline workers since the start of their efforts. "They say it makes a difference to have someone out there saying thanks for what you're doing." 1297
LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Ohio nonprofit LakewoodAlive has apologized after a man dressed in a blackface Tiger Woods costume marched in the organization’s Spooky Pooch Parade. People on social media have called the costume racist, disgusting and offensive. In a video posted to Facebook by LakewoodAlive that has since been removed, the unidentified man was seen wearing blackface makeup while dressed in Woods’ trademark red polo shirt and Nike hat. He was seen holding a frame with the words “Breaking News – Tiger’s Back,” and pushing a pet stroller outfitted with a mock putting green.By Monday morning, several users responded on the nonprofit's Facebook page condemning the man’s costume as well as the organization for allowing him to march in the parade.“You need to respond to the fact that a man in blackface marched in your parade,” Clara Masters said in a Facebook comment. “This is not okay and incredibly offensive.”“This racist costume should never have been allowed in the event,” wrote Alison Meredith. “The participant should have been stopped at registration, and when that failed should have been pulled from the parade at whatever point an organizer saw it, even at the risk of 'causing a scene'. The tepid response and shrugging off of responsibility are making a terrible situation much worse. You allowed a blatant and disgusting display of racism in your event that was advertised as being for the community. At the absolute least the community is owed an apology and a clear plan for future events that includes advertised guidelines and a firm zero tolerance of racist costumes, speech, actions, etc, and accountability from the organizers and event team that they will not allow something like this to happen to again.”On Monday morning, LakewoodAlive posted a statement regarding the parade: 1843
LAKEVIEW, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan couple whose large family attracted attention by growing to include 14 sons has welcomed their first daughter nearly three decades after the birth of their first child. Kateri Schwandt gave birth Thursday to Maggie Jayne, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces and entered a world filled with 14 older brothers. Jay Schwandt tells the Detroit Free Press that he and his wife, both 45, “are overjoyed and beyond excited to add Maggie Jayne to our family.” They live in the rural community of Lakeview, about 30 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. The couple’s oldest child, 28-year-old Tyler Schwandt, says his parents thought they would never have a daughter after 14 sons. 710

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office released the identities of the two men killed in a paragliding accident over the weekend. The ME identified the victims as 43-year-old Glenn Johnny Peter Bengtsson, of Carlsbad, and Raul Gonzalez Valerio, 61, of Laguna Hills.Questions still remain regarding the double fatal collision at Torrey Pines Gliderport on Saturday afternoon. The two certified pilots were flying their paragliders when they collided into each other, fell into a cliff, and died, authorities said.RELATED: 2 paragliders dead after colliding in mid-air, crashing into cliffMany who were at the Gliderport said Saturday's weather conditions were absolutely perfect, so they do not believe the incident was weather-related. While many people were flying, they said there were not enough people in the air at the time, so there wasn’t any aerial traffic jam. Both men were certified pilots, one with an advanced certification. They both were aware of the rules -- to keep a safe distance between each other, and that the glider along the ocean needs to make way for the one flying along the cliffs, who has the right-of-way. So what exactly happened? Many 10News spoke to said it must have been a freak accident. Now, the Torrey Pines Gliderport staff, San Diego police, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and the Medical Examiner's Office are working to find answers. Gabriel Jebb with the Torrey Pines Gliderport issued 10News this statement: 1496
