SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Steve Fiorina has been at 10News for 35 years and, in that time, has covered some incredible victories. San Diego applauded when the Padres went to the World Series in '84, facing the Detroit Tigers. And again in '98 to take on the New York Yankees. No championship rings but the Pads made it to the grand stage. The Chargers hit the pinnacle with their '94 season, Super Bowl XXIX in Miami, January, 1995; San Francisco 49ers versus the San Diego Chargers.10News put out the word that we would simulate a road trip to Miami, flying into six cities you would pass through if driving the route. Chargers fans meeting us all along the way.People lining the street to welcome us and a massive rally at the high school gym.And the Chargers fight song rang out, too. The refrain repeated the next day in New Orleans.Final destination: Miami. A lopsided loss; 49ers trounced our guys, 49 to 26, but it was an electrifying time for Chargers fans.Every year the Padres home opener is a day-long party. Before Petco Park was built, we flew to Baltimore to illustrate the charm of Camden Yards; the template for our new ballpark.A personal thrill--seeing Tony Gwynn presented his 6th Silver Slugger award from another Hall of Famer; my boyhood baseball idol, the Cardinals' Stan the Man Musial.Last year, watching as a crowd of fans paid tribute to Mr. Padre. Tony's statue now gracing the Lake Poway Park near where he made his home.San Diego cherishes it's military; the Padres inviting and saluting our service men and women. And who can forget the pageantry of Opening Day at Del Mar Racetrack?Comic Con is magnificent! Almost a week of fun and fantasy every summer.Let's go back to 1985, when the Christian Emergency Relief Team out of Carlsbad invited us along on a mission of mercy. Flying to Honduras, along the border during the Nicaraguan War. These Angels of the Jungle built a hospital and treated these fragile refugees. There are angels out in force every spring at the Embarcadero Marina Park North. The Celebration of Champions honors the doctors and nurses at Rady Children's Hospital and raises the spirits of hundreds of children and their families fighting to live healthy, happy lives. Sports figures and media types running with these champions and honoring those tearfully paying homage to the ones who've passed. It's an emotional day.4th of July is a blast! Thousands descend on Scripps Ranch each year. Snow Summit was a bit colder but a fabulous time as well. Finally we remember a little Lakeside girl: an Angel in Heaven, Hero on Earth, Forever in our Hearts. Kiera Larsen was ten years old when the family SUV began rolling down the driveway toward her playmates. She ran over and pushed two younger friends to safety but was crushed to death herself. Kiera was recognized with a Carnegie Hero medal and a personal letter from then President Barack Obama. We celebrate Kiera. 2918

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego is being allowed to reopen, but certain parts of the park will have to remain closed, a San Diego County spokesman said.A county spokesman told ABC 10News that the park is being allowed to reopen under California’s guidance for zoos.SeaWorld San Diego will be able to open its outdoor areas of the park, but indoor areas -- such as its aquariums -- and rides will not be open to guests under the specific zoo guidance.Under the zoo guidance, the park will have to post a Safe Reopening Plan like other businesses. It remains unknown when the park will officially reopen; SeaWorld San Diego officials did not immediately respond to ABC 10News’ request for comment. The park has been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park's website states that for season passholders, tickets will be extended as long as the closure lasted. The company’s most recent earnings report revealed troubling numbers from the second quarter and first six months of 2020, including revenue down 96 percent compared to the same time last year.Parents around San Diego said the news is a welcome sign after a summer of closures. Raquel Cusi said her four kids ask when they can go back to SeaWorld on a daily basis."For me I feel like I’ve been born and raised in San Diego, SeaWorld is a staple, and the fact that we can’t be there is sad, so I think it’ll be really awesome for San Diego families," said Cusi.Claudia Harris is a mom of three and said her kids love going to see the killer whales. In a zoom call, the kids all shared their excitement."I’m so excited to watch the killer whale show because the whales are so cool," said her son, while holding a whale toy.SeaWorld is joining the San Diego Zoo and the USS Midway in partial reopenings, but a LEGOLAND spokesperson said they have not been told when that park will reopen. LEGOLAND General Manager Kurt Stocks said, in a statement, “LEGOLAND California Resort is ready and eager to open once the state and county guidelines are given. All health and safety guidelines that have been approved for other San Diego attractions can easily be observed at our Park even if it means closing the very few indoor attractions.” 2219

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University set a new record for its Aztec Rock Hunger annual food drive, collecting 590,503 pounds of food from Sept. 28 through Oct. 21, which the school will now donate to the Jacobs & Cushman Food Bank. The amount exceeds last years total of 588,915 pounds, and includes both non-perishable foods and  donations, which the school collected at the SDSU bookstore, athletic events, SDSU Dining locations and Aztec Proud events. Jim Flores, CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, said the partnership with the school, which has raised more than two million pounds of food since its inception in 2008, has been beneficial."We are very grateful to the students, faculty and administration at San Diego State University for supporting the food bank," Flores said. "We are currently feeding more than 37,000 people every month in communities throughout the county, including thousands of students through our College Hunger-relief Program." Aztecs Rock Hunger was started by Associated Students (A.S.) which works alongside multiple campus groups, including SDSU Athletics and the College Area Business District. Christian Onwuka, A.S. vice president of financial affairs, said the partnership is a source of pride. "It has been amazing to see so many different divisions and facets of campus come together and give their all toward this campaign fighting food insecurity," he said. Not all of the donations will go to the food bank, however. 20 percent of the food remaining on campus will go towards helping SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT works to prevent food insecurity for students on campus, as well as provide emergency support for those in a sudden economic crisis.  1894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo and Safari Park hope to reopen "in the coming weeks" now that California has released guidance for zoos to open their gates starting Friday.Last week, the state released guidance for county's approved for accelerated reopenings to open businesses like zoos, family entertainment centers, gyms, bars and wineries, and more starting June 12.(The state's criteria for sectors can be found here.)In a statement to 10News, the zoo said staff are reviewing the state's guidance to plan how to best reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic:"We are delighted to receive word from the Governor letting us know that the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park will be able to open this month. We can’t wait to invite our community back to the zoo and park in the coming weeks. We have just received information from the State regarding the requirements and guidelines for us to re-open and are reviewing this document so we can determine next steps to open safely and responsibly for our community. We will take the next couple of days to determine our timeline for opening and expect to have information to share early next week."RELATED: San Diego cleared to reopen zoos, gyms, bars and wineries, day campsIn May, representatives from several other local theme parks, including Legoland California, SeaWorld, and the USS Midway Museum, met with county officials to discuss reopening. In a joint statement, the parks said they plan to reopen on July 1:"LEGOLAND California Resort, The USS Midway Museum and SeaWorld San Diego reviewed its collective re-opening safety plan with County of San Diego officials today. While the attractions will all be ready to reopen on July 1 if authorized, the plan now moves on to State officials for additional review and guidance. As the San Diego attraction coalition, we were greatly appreciative to County staff for the opportunity to present our reopening plan to them today."SeaWorld sent an email to passholders last week detailing their safe reopening plans, which includes reservation-based visitors only, social distancing, temperature checks for employees and guests, and sanitation protocols throughout the park.Epidemiologist and National University professor Dr. Tyler Smith told 10News reporter Jared Aarons that close-contact areas in parks could still be a threat for spreading the coronavirus.RELATED: San Diego theme parks aim for July 1 reopening if state allows"Everybody's touching them, every 90 seconds," said Smith. "Even if you have disinfectant, it doesn't mean that it necessarily is not going to end up on that ride for the next person. Maybe they can just focus on areas that it's just watching. Watching a show, viewing an animal. I think that could pretty well reduce the transmission."He added that he believes San Diego County is in a good place — in terms of case numbers — to reopen attractions as long as rules are followed. 2933
