Becky Sloan is the first to arrive.The food is set up outside the home of Tomira Baca-Craig, who runs a food co-op that divvies out extra bread donated by bakeries and stores. On this morning, she posted the giveaway on her "Buy Nothing" Facebook group.It's not just bread. Sloan showed reporters with KGTV in San Diego photos of baseballs, crafting items, shoes for her children and home decor, just some of the stuff she's received in the last two years. All of the items were offered up by neighbors on the Bay Park/Bay Ho Buy Nothing page."I think I might have saved anywhere from ,500 to ,000," Sloan said.Sloan actually gifts more items than she receives."It's awesome. Buying a vehicle is a commitment even in the best of times. A down payment ties up a lot of ready cash. You make payments for 48, 60 or even 84 months. And worse, the car loses value as soon as you drive it off the lot, which means you may owe more than it’s worth for years.That’s not a great fit in this pandemic-driven recession, where flexibility and adequate emergency savings are keys to financial survival.Right now the answer to the lease-or-buy question “is a very big ‘yes,’ for leasing,” says Oren Weintraub, president of Authority Auto. He’s advising clients of his car-buying concierge service to at least consider leasing because of the current economic conditions.You can put little or no money down. You can select a shorter term than a car loan. And the risk of massive depreciation down the road is borne by the bank, not you.A lot of buyers are coming to the same conclusion: The percentage of buyers who use automakers’ finance arm and choose to lease has risen from 31% to 52% year over year, according to industry analyst J.D. Power.5 reasons leasing works nowNot everyone is a candidate for leasing. But here are five factors that could tip the decision toward leasing rather than buying your next vehicle.1. Leasing offers a shorter commitment. “No one knows what will happen over the next few years,” Weintraub says. “People are worried about job security and their finances so the commitment of a car purchase isn’t as appealing.” Instead, consumers are leaning toward leasing because there are affordable two- and three-year leasing agreements available. Also, points out Scot Hall of the lease-trading site Swapalease, leases are more flexible since the contract can easily be transferred to another person without a severe financial penalty.2. Leasing requires little upfront money. During the recent lockdowns, many people burned through their savings and had little cash left for a down payment for buying a car. But lease contracts can be initiated with little or no money down. Of course, a no-money-down monthly lease payment is higher, but some people still prefer it, Weintraub says. If monthly payments are still too high, it’s best to consider leasing a lower-priced car to stay in your budget.3. Low interest rates mean more affordable payments. Current lending rates are at a nearly seven-year low, according to auto site Edmunds, with many no-interest loans available. Weintraub says this substantially reduces the cost of monthly payments.4. Manufacturer incentives abound. Each month, carmakers offer incentives to make car purchases and leases more affordable. Weintraub says there are currently many of these low-cost leasing incentives available. That could change as sales rebound, though. To find deals, Hall recommends going to the manufacturer’s website and searching for special offers. The terms of the lease are spelled out by listing the three major elements of the contract:Monthly payment.Length of the lease in months.Amount due at signing, which is similar to a down payment.Lenders can adjust these factors and apply the cash incentives in a number of ways to arrive at a low lease payment, Hall says.5. Leasing protects against sudden depreciation. Leasing is based, in part, on the predicted value of the car at the end of the contract. But in today’s world, Weintraub says that no one truly knows what the car will be worth in three years. So if the value of the car unexpectedly drops, it’s the lender’s problem, not yours. If, however, the car’s value is unexpectedly high at the end of the lease, you have the option to buy the car yourself and can possibly make money by selling it.The basics on leasingTrying to get the best deal on a lease is different from negotiating to buy a car. Here are a few tactics that the experts recommend.Check pricing guides. Because of limited inventory caused by factory shutdowns, the price of some cars has risen, Weintraub says. Begin by checking car prices on sites such as Edmunds, TrueCar and Kelley Blue Book. But keep in mind that these are not real-world prices.Shop multiple dealerships. Get apples-to-apples lease quotes from at least three dealerships to find your best deal. Tell the dealer the amount you want to pay in drive-off fees, the length of the loan — three years is the “gold standard,” according to Hall — and the number of miles you want to drive. Based on this, the dealer will give you a monthly payment. Every part of the deal is negotiable.Cast a wide net. Car factories were closed during the shutdown, so choices may be limited for a few months. Some manufacturers’ websites allow you to search multiple dealerships to find the right model in your preferred color.Keep an eye on the miles. Understand how many miles of driving are included with the lease agreement. In most leases, 12,000 miles a year is standard. But recently, some leases include only 10,000 miles or fewer, but offer a lower monthly payment. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It’s a job balancing life and death and a position of power in our community. It’s a duty often costing more than a person can earn. But for so many police officers across the country, the call to serve overshadows the sacrifice.Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Sergeant Donnie Penix has blue blood running through his veins. He started in 1997 as a patrol officer and has since served on the SWAT team, as a detective, and is now a sergeant in the Airport Division. He even served alongside his wife and his father who were fellow officers at CMPD for years themselves.For Sgt. Penix, his career is something he’s proud of, but it has also brought him a lot of pain.“There's been some moments across my career that both physically, mentally and emotionally impacted me, and I carry that with me to this day,” said Sgt. Penix.The job became even tougher after an officer involved shooting in 2016.“It was kind of the straw that broke the camel's back,” said Sgt. Penix.The sergeant and his officers were tracking a man wanted for murder in January of 2016. When that suspect shot at officers, Penix and his team responded with deadly force.“It was the worst of the worst,” said Penix. “A night where one of mine was injured, we've taken a life, and it was the most traumatic experience I've ever been in as a police officer. It's not what you signed up to do. We signed up to help people.”After that night, Penix went back to his usual shift feeling anything but normal.“It unleashed a lot of emotion for me and sent me spiraling down a really, really dark place. Every day I relived that experience over and over again, and I became so reclusive and I just internalized everything,” he said of his emotional reaction.The pain became so overwhelming he almost quit his job.“I set my gun and badge on my table at home, and I said, ‘I'm done.’ But I made a commitment to this profession and commitment to the people that I work with and work for to see it out,” he said.So, he did something he’d never done before. Sgt. Penix reached out for help.“We have that armor up where we're supposed to be the ones that help people, but we rarely ask for help for ourselves,” he said. “Once I made that decision to do that, it was hands on the best thing I've ever done in my life. And that's why I'm able to still function day and had a successful career.”The help he got was unique to this department. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has an on-staff psychologist to help officers process what they experience and build up their mental health resiliency before negative experiences on the job.Dr. David Robert Englert, the staff psychologist for CMPD will begin helping recruits on the second day of the police academy. He said it’s about opening the door for tough conversations, so the officers will know it’s okay to ask for help anytime in their career.“Why don't we come up with a program in which we try to make people more resilient before bad things happen?” asked Dr. Englert. “Bad things are going to happen. When they do, the person, the individual, and their family will be more resilient, more able to recover quickly from that event.”Englert said this resource is critical for officers who can and will suffer physical and mental impacts from their work.“When you kick into high gear, the blood flows to your arms and legs and it flows away from your digestive track, and so it messes up with your digestion, your body's not healing itself,” said Englert of high-intensity police work. “You're not feeling rested. It really does potentially take years off a person's life.”But this is not just for officers. The 911 dispatchers, clerks and the entire staff of CMPD is exposed to trauma. Dr. Englert is there to assist them too.“From the moment they sit down to the moment they leave, it's high impact all day every day. Some kind of tragedy,” said Englert of the 911 dispatchers. “My crime scene technicians are going to go and see dead bodies almost every day, if not every day.We want to make sure that everyone here is taken care of and has resources.”Going on patrol and responding to calls is just a small part of the stress officers face every day and talking about those traumas is just the beginning of the resources this department offers.“For 72% of police officers in the country, the number one stressor was finances, and so, one of the first things that we did here was brought in a financial counselor to meet one on one with people and their spouses to help them come up with a financial plan,” said Dr. Englert. “Whether they had thousands of the bank or they’re thousands in debt.”To further assist officers and staff with finances, the department holds seminars for financial planning.“We have small group debt reduction classes. Nine, one-hour classes where they can sit together, work together as groups to get themselves out of debt,” he said.The department also has peer support groups so officers know they can rely on each other for help.“We also developed the officer involved shooting peer support, and so when an officer unfortunately has to take life or fire the weapon, they're assigned one of these folks who's been in this situation in the past,” said Englert.Deputy Chief Cherie E. Pearsall said normalizing this focus on mental health is paving the way for a new kind of officer.“You don't want to send broken people to handle broken situations,” she said. “We find funding for ammunition, we find funding for tactical vests to protect our officers, but we then have to do a good job of advocating for funding to protect their head and their heart.”Pearsall believes this program could be a model for other departments across the country and hopes this will help mend the broken relationship between police officers and the public.“They are human, and they may have had some of the same issues at home before they came to work there did come in to assist you with. And so, if there's a mutual respect and mutual understanding, then I think all of our situations will turn out ending with a human reaction in the positive direction that we wanted it to end in,” said the deputy chief.Sgt. Penix hopes the work he’s done for his own mental health shows the community there are officers out there fighting to truly protect and serve.“We're putting ourselves out there to say it's okay. It's okay to have those emotions, it's okay to hurt. It’s okay to ask for help. We're not invulnerable. We’re human just like anyone else. We can't do our job to the best of our abilities if we're not well inside,” said Penix. 6580

  

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A motorcyclist from San Marcos died Sunday after crashing into a truck in Carlsbad.According to Carlsbad police, the 19-year-old motorcyclist was riding along the 4600 block of Carlsbad Boulevard when he collided with a Toyota Tundra around 4:35 p.m.Emergency responders arrived and transported the motorcyclist to the hospital but he was pronounced dead on the way.The driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man from Grand Terrace, stopped on the scene.Investigators have not said what caused the collision. Champion is phasing out an exclusive line at Target and Wall Street isn't pleased.Hanesbrands, the parent of Hanes, Champion, Maidenform and Playtex, plunged 19% on Wednesday after it told investors that it would end a longtime deal with Target.The company reported that its profit last quarter fell 18% from the same time last year because costs and expenses both grew, adding to the stock selloff.Hanesbrands has partnered with Target, selling the C9 by Champion men's, women's and children's activewear clothing and shoe brand for 15 years. But the company won't renew its contract for the line with Target when it expires in early 2020.Once the deal lapses, Hanesbrands will still sell clothes there. The retailer accounted for 13% of the company's .4 billion in sales last year and was the biggest customer in its activewear business. Target was Hanesbrands' second largest buyer overall behind Walmart.C9 has been a big cash driver for Hanesbrands, raking in 0 million in sales over the last 12 months. The line also includes sports equipment and extends to plus-size shoppers and pregnant women.Champion is the company's second-largest brand behind Hanes, and it has been growing as it heads to retailers in new markets, including Europe and Asia. Champion has benefited from partnerships with designers and brands like Supreme."Consumers are demanding brands with athletic authenticity," CEO Gerald Evans told analysts on a call Wednesday. "We have driven a brand elevation strategy for Champion to capitalize on these consumer dynamics."The brand's global sales grew 18% last quarter, and Hanesbrands projects Champion will reach more than billion in sales by 2022.Although the company said ending the C9 contract with Target won't affect its long-term forecast for Champion, analysts grilled Hanesbrands executives for answers on why the deal expired and how it planned to replace C9 sales.Evans said Hanesbrands hasn't determined whether it will end the line after 2020, but he left the door open to continuing C9 at another retailer: "There is equity in that brand."One analyst on the call, Doug Thomas at Gamco Investors, believed Target made a mistake by walking away from C9."I just feel like Target must be really out of touch with maybe their core consumers," he said. "This is the time in my view— and I guess a lot of other people's view— to redouble their commitment to Champion." 2416
