SAN DIEGO — Corinne Lam didn't waste anytime once she learned she wouldn't be allowed to cut hair indoors anymore.She spent Monday afternoon gathering tents, misters, and rugs to make it somewhat bearable to move Rancho Bernardo’s Salotto Salon’s operations into its parking lot."We were essentially ready to start operating tomorrow outdoors,” she said Tuesday.Governor Newsom on Monday ordered salons, gyms and malls to cease indoor operations to slow the increasing spread of Covid-19.Lam didn't think moving outside would be a problem. After all, the County of San Diego said businesses could shift operations outside under tents, canopies or sun shelters if the sides are not closed and there is sufficient air movement.Lam, who owns the salon with her husband, was planning to do just that until she learned the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.“The law - in the Business and Professions Code - states that all barbering and cosmetology services must be performed IN a licensed establishment,” said Cheri Gyuro, spokeswoman for the state Department of Consumer Affairs. “Therefore, these types of business in the required counties must be closed immediately.”It's a devastating blow to Salotto Salon and those like it across the county - because unlike last shutdown, they've exhausted all of their stimulus funds through the paycheck protection program.“We're not just hairstylists,” Lam said. “We are professionals and business owners and mothers, and all we want is to be able to do what we do.” 1540

SAN DIEGO — Medical workers from all over San Diego made their way into SDCCU Stadium Wednesday to pick up free Personal Protective Equipment for their small and medium sized practices.The workers got free hand sanitizer, N95 masks, surgical masks, gloves and gowns. "It's really hard to find in stores, online, it's all out, everywhere," said Juana Vasquez, medical assistant at La Mesa Family Medical Groups, who was picking up supplies.Volunteers from the San Diego County Medical Society, UCSD Medical School and the Mira Mesa High School football team handed drivers boxes of the gear in the stadium's parking lot. Medical organizations of 50 or fewer are eligible, and more than 500 of them registered for the event. Dr. Holly Yang, a hospice and palliative care specialist at Scripps and president of the San Diego County Medical Society, said larger hospital systems have been able to source the necessary PPE for its staff. For smaller operations, however, it has been a challenge."Everyone wants to take care of patients," Yang said. "We should not in this country have to be afraid for ourselves and our families. We should have the right equipment. It’s completely inexcusable that this far into the pandemic that that is not available and I’m so grateful that we are able to do this for our small practices."The items came available due to Gov. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 28-year-old man who appeared to suffer some type of medical emergency and passed out after fighting with deputies arresting him at a North County convenience store last week died at a hospital, authorities reported Wednesday.Marco Napoles Rosales of El Monte was pronounced brain-dead Tuesday, six days after his violent encounter with law enforcement personnel, according to sheriff's officials. A ruling on his cause of death remains on hold pending an autopsy.The events that led to Rosales' confrontation with law enforcement personnel began about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, when a 911 caller reported that he had been acting strangely in a Circle K market on state Route 76 in Fallbrook, seemed to be "under the influence of drugs" and was refusing to leave the business, Lt. Rich Williams said.RELATED: San Diego deputy, suspect hospitalized after violent confrontationEight deputies arrived a short time later, contacted the Los Angeles-area resident and tried to evaluate him, at which point he allegedly became belligerent.During an ensuing struggle, the patrol personnel shocked Rosales with an electric stun gun, and he bit one of them on the hand, Williams said.The deputies were able to get Rosales into restraints after two men who saw what was happening while driving by hurried over and helped subdue him.A short time later, while being taken to a hospital for an examination, the suspect experienced apparent medical distress and lost consciousness.When informed that Rosales was beyond recovery, his family decided to keep him on life support for organ-donation purposes, the lieutenant said. 1636

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 27-year-old man suffered non-life threatening knife wounds to his back and abdomen when he was attacked by an assailant this morning in the Logan Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The victim was walking across a pedestrian bridge in the 2000 block of Kearny Avenue a little after 1:05 a.m. when the suspect walked up behind him and stabbed him in the back and abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department."The victim thought it was a punch until he felt blood and realized he was stabbed,'' Heims said. "The victim ran across the street and it is unknown where the suspect went.
