BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China will work with Belgium to improve political trust and substantial cooperation to make new progress in bilateral ties, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Wednesday.     During talks with Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, Xi put forward a four-point proposal to cement bilateral ties:     -- To maintain high-level contacts and political dialogues. China welcomes King Albert II to participate in the 2010 Shanghai Expo and hopes the governments, parliaments and political parties of the two countries to increase exchanges for more understanding and trust;     -- To consider the core interests and concerns of each other. China hopes the two sides would deal with the bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, properly handle disputes based on principles of mutual respect, equal treatment and noninterference in each other's internal affairs, to enhance the development of the bilateral ties in a healthy and stable way; Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (L) shakes hands with Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, during their talks in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on Oct. 7, 2009. He will also visit Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.

PHOENIX, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- At the invitation of the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo arrived here on Sunday to begin his official visit to the United States on the final leg of his three-nation America tour.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, highlighted the "historical" growth of the China-U.S. relations in the past 30 years since the two nations forged diplomatic relations, noting that the bilateral ties already become the most important and the most dynamic ones in the world. BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. The 11th meeting for Chinese diplomats was held in Beijing on July 17-20.The nine members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao, attended the meeting.     "Under the new situation, diplomacy must rely on, serve and promote the development. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

  

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- One person is missing and more than a million residents affected as typhoon Koppu landed in southern China's Guangdong Province Tuesday, local authorities said.     About 1.06 million people in 69 townships in Jiangmen and Yangjiang cities were feeling the effect of the storm at 6 p.m., said Guangdong Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters. One person in Zhuhai City is missing.     In Shenzhen City, 169 flights were delayed on Tuesday, stranding nearly 10,000 passengers.     The typhoon, the 15th this year, has brought heavy rains to Guangdong.     In Yangjiang City, where the typhoon downgraded into a strong tropical storm, fallen trees and branches could be seen along the roads.     In Sanya City in the southern island province of Hainan, the typhoon brought rain of more than 167 millimeters.     Shipping services across the southern Qiongzhou Strait, which have been suspended since Monday afternoon, were expected to resume Wednesday.     Local experts have warned of flash flooding, with the possible dangers of mudslides and landslides.     Koppu would bring heavy rain to most parts of southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hainan and Guangdong during the next two days, China's central observatory said.
