The National Transportation Safety Board is launching a probe that will focus on how first responders handled a fatal crash of a Tesla Model S in Florida this week.Two people died Tuesday evening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a gray 2014 Tesla Model S ran off the road and collided with a concrete wall. The vehicle then caught on fire, engulfing the car in flames, local police said.The NTSB said in a statement Wednesday that the investigation will "primarily focus on emergency response in relation to the electric vehicle battery fire, including fire department activities and towing operations."The driver and front seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger in the back seat survived and was taken to the hospital, authorities said.Police said the car's speed was likely a factor in the incident. The NTSB did not indicate that it suspects first responders did something wrong. The Gulf Coast appears to have dodged a bullet after Marco — once a tropical storm — collapsed into a post-tropical cyclone as it neared the Louisiana coast. But the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns that the region faces a more substantial threat in Hurricane Laura.Just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the NHC reported that Laura had officially strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of over 74 mph. The number of empty apartments available to rent in Manhattan soared to its highest level in recent history this summer.There are more than 13,000 apartments on the market in the heart of New York City, according to a real estate report from Douglas Elliman and Miller Samuel. The group says this is the most inventory they have seen in Manhattan in 14 years of keeping track.July’s spike of 13,117 available units is an increase over June’s inventory of 10,789.For context, July 2020’s inventory is nearly 122 percent higher than last year; in July 2019 there were roughly 5,900 available apartments.The group also says July had the biggest year-over-year drop in median rent price in nearly nine years. The median rental price for an apartment in Manhattan, including anything from a studio to a 3-bedroom, was ,320 in July, and was ,595 in July 2019.The report also tracks the Queens and Brooklyn rental market.
