LEXINGTON, Va. — The Virginia Military Institute has removed a prominent statue of Confederate Gen. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Around 9:45 a.m. Monday, a crane plucked the statue off its base and slowly hoisted it away at the public military college in Lexington, where allegations of systemic racism roiled the campus this fall. Until several years ago, some cadets were required to salute the Confederate statue. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A gas leak that forced residents in a La Mesa neighborhood to shelter in place Tuesday has been contained. According to firefighters, construction crews working on a wall hit the gas line around 3 p.m. on the 8000 block of Vista Drive. Two homes were evacuated following the incident, while nearby neighbors were told to shelter in place. 373

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities are looking for help identifying a man they say pointed a finger at a 7-Eleven clerk and demanded cash early Wednesday before leaving empty handed.It happened around 2 a.m. at the store located on Bonita Beach Road near Imperial Shores Boulevard.According to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, the man walked into the store with a red shirt covering his face, and approached the clerk with a pointed finger.  The man demanded all the cash from the register, but the clerk refused and the man left the store.He was seen riding a white bicycle north on Imperial Shores Boulevard.The man is described as being in his early 20s, approximately 5 foot 8 inches and weighing 165 pounds.  748

(KGTV) - Scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography say atmospheric rivers will be the main source of California's rainfall over the next 80 years.The study, released Tuesday morning, says that could lead to more flooding, more drought and longer wildfire seasons."This region is becoming more sub-tropical and the dry season is expanding," says Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at Scripps. "That is the case with all of the Mediterranean climate regions around the world."Right now, the study says California gets 40-50% of its annual rainfall from atmospheric rivers. Those are long, drawn out rain events that last for days. "The mountains squeeze the rain out of them.""In California, most of the floods, historically, are associated with atmospheric rivers," says Gershunov. LANATANA, Florida — A man jumped out of bushes and randomly attacked a woman with a chainsaw around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, Lantana police said.The woman, who is in her 60s, was walking along Hypoluxo Road near Seacrest Boulevard when the man attacked her, according to police.The woman was taken to a local hospital for with serious injuries to the chest and hands but is expected to survive.Lantana police have the attacker in custody. They identified him as 20-year-old Juan Cabrera Jr."He actually made a comment that he woke up this morning, went and got something to eat. We can't confirm or deny if he's got any kind of mental illness or not. But he did make a comment to the investigator that he saw the lady in the area and he quote stated, 'I'm going to end this woman's life,' " Lantana Police Chief Sean Scheller said.The incident occurred near the Super 8 Motel at 1200 Hypoluxo Blvd., where the suspect was staying.The woman said she did not know the man and thought he was a landscaper, police said. He's facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder.He will be booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.  Lantana Police Chief tells us the suspect confessed to the chainsaw attack.
