SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County Vector Control officials reminded residents today to protect themselves against wild rodents after three deer mice were found carrying the potentially deadly hantavirus.Vector Control officials collected the mice in Boulevard during a regular monitoring exercise. Hantavirus occurrences in wild rodents are not uncommon in undeveloped areas of the county, but residents can avoid potentially infected rodents by keeping them out of areas like sheds, garages and homes.Vector Control officials also found five hantavirus-carrying mice in Bonsall, 4S Ranch and Potrero in January.There is no cure or vaccine for hantavirus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of infection can include fever, aches in the large muscle groups, dizziness, digestive issues and abdominal pain. Hantavirus infection is generally unlikely, though, because rodents tend to avoid humans and developed spaces.Residents are advised to use ``wet cleaning'' methods like a bleach solution spray or a sponge and a mop if they find rodent droppings or nests.Sweeping or vacuuming nests and droppings can send the virus into the air, raising the chance of infection. Vector Control officials also advise residents to double-bag and seal rodent debris before throwing it away.Residents can avoid hantavirus exposure by sealing holes that are larger than a dime in homes and adjacent spaces and quickly eliminating rodent debris and infestations. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Seven influenza-related deaths were confirmed last week in San Diego County, bringing the number of fatalities so far this flu season to 57, compared to 30 at this time last year, the Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.The ages of the patients ranged from 60 to 89, and all had underlying medical conditions, according to the HHSA.The total number of cases dropped for the third week in a row. The county logged 1,548 cases last week, compared to 1,689 the week before."While influenza cases have continued to decline, flu activity is still widespread in the region," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "People should continue getting vaccinated and taking other preventive measures to avoid getting sick."The seasonal total of influenza cases is now 15,097. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System will begin a pilot program Tuesday to reduce fines and allow fare violators new options for clearing their citations.Passengers will still be required to have a valid fare while riding, but any citations MTS issues on or after Sept. 1 will qualify under the new program guidelines."Our goal is to be flexible in our fare enforcement efforts so that riders have an opportunity to purchase a fare or to correct their fine without a criminal process," said Nathan Fletcher, MTS board chair and San Diego County supervisor. "Bringing the citation payment process in-house to MTS rather than straight to the courts will help our passengers avoid burdensome court fees. But more importantly, it will allow MTS staff to educate passengers on what payment options are available."The MTS board approved the diversionary program on June 18 after criticism rose during the pandemic that the transit authority was saddling poorer people with unfair burdens. MTS has reported for several years that it has a fare evasion rate of 3%, but system staff estimate that MTS will lose close to million annually for every percentage point that rate goes up.The Fare Enforcement Diversion Program will offer:-- Reduced fines/more payment locations: Citations will be reduced to .
