SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described.The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said.They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described.She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans plans to close a portion of eastbound State Route 56 overnight Thursday.According to the agency, all eastbound lanes of SR-56 at Camino Del Sur as well as the Camino Del Sur on-ramp will close Thursday from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m.The closure will take place so crews can work on the Carmel Road overcrossing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- City Council members Friday announced a plan to push for a temporary shelter for the homeless in Murphy Canyon.Council members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez will hold a news conference Monday to request that a shelter be built at the former Chargers training facility.The complex, owned by the city, has remained unused since the Chargers moved to Los Angeles and will likely remain vacant for several more years.Announcing the press conference, the councilmembers said, “The San Diego River has seen an explosion of homeless encampments this year. This is an environmental nightmare and extremely dangerous with the rainy season rapidly approaching.”More than 100 homeless encampments were counted by volunteers with the San Diego River Park Foundation in October. 792

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California has rejected San Diego County's request for a tier adjustment after the region was moved into the state's purple reopening tier.The county said that "San Diego’s increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier. County has interviewed cases to identify potential exposure settings and tracked community outbreaks."County health officials say businesses that will be impacted by purple tier restrictions saw the following breakdown of COVID-19 cases in October:Restaurant/bars: 7.4% of COVID-19 cases (715 of 9,646)Retail: 6.6% of COVID-19 cases (636 of 9,646)Places of worship: 1.9% of COVID-19 cases (184 of 9,646)K-12 schools: 1.7% of COVID-19 cases (165 of 9,646)Gyms: 0.4% of COVID-19 cases (39 of 9,646)In reference to October's data, the county said that, "outbreak data also show these sectors make up a small percentage of the cases overall ...
