(AP) — Gavin Newsom will become California's 40th governor on Monday, succeeding fellow Democrat Jerry Brown. Here are 10 things to know about the next leader of the nation's most populous state:—Served as lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2019 and San Francisco mayor from 2004 to 2011.—Married to Jennifer Siebel Newsom, a documentary filmmaker and actress, and the couple has four children. Newsom is the son of William Newsom III, a former justice on the state court of appeals.—He is 51 years old.—Opened a San Francisco wine shop in 1992 with Billy Getty, the grandson of the oil tycoon J. Paul Getty. It grew into a network of wineries, hotels and restaurants known as the PlumpJack Group. A month later, the state Supreme Court halted the practice and voided the licenses.—Proposed and campaigned heavily for the winning 2016 gun control ballot measure that restricted possession of high-capacity magazines and required a background check to buy bullets, among other things.—Supported the 2016 ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana, which won passage.—Has dyslexia, a disorder that can make it difficult to read. Newsom said it's forced him to learn how to over-prepare, and he memorizes most of his speeches.—Longtime family friend of Jerry Brown, and recalled licking envelopes for campaign materials during Brown's 1992 presidential bid. 1778

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers want the state Attorney General to investigate all police shootings that kill an unarmed civilian. The bill is one of the highest-profile reforms filed this year in response to the killing of George Floyd while in police custody. The Senate OK'd the bill Sunday despite opposition from Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who has called it “untenable and unreasonable.” He says it would cost his office up to million a year. But the bill easily passed the Senate with bipartisan support and is now headed toward a final vote in the state Assembly. 603

SACRAMENTO (KGTV) - Cal Fire identified Tuesday high-priority projects to protect more than 200 areas at high risk of a fire, including those in San Diego County. The East County neighborhoods of Crest and Guatay were among the 35 communities considered to be in urgent need of attention in a list released by Cal Fire. Both communities have community fuel breaks that need to be cleared, a Cal Fire report showed. The Guatay fuel break covers 128 acres over 15 communities, affecting 221,282 people. The Crest fuel break covers 60 acres over 3 communities and affects 5,278 people, according to the survey. RELATED: California fire officials want more logging after wildfiresSouthern California wildfire burn zones on alert during stormHow to prepare defensible space around your homeCrews may need to remove hazardous dead trees, clear vegetation, create fuel breaks and community defensible spaces, and establish ingress and egress corridors. More than 25 million acres of California wildlands are under ‘very high’ or ‘extreme fire’ threat, according to Cal Fire. The agency also cited the encroaching construction of new homes in wildland areas as a growing threat, putting more people and property at risk. “California is increasingly at risk of wildfire, and certain populations are particularly vulnerable given the location of their communities and socioeconomic factors such as age and lack of mobility. The tragic loss of lives and property in the town of Paradise during last year’s Camp Fire makes that clear,” CAL FIRE Director Thom Porter said. “California needs an all-of-the-above approach to protect public safety and improve the health of our forest ecosystems.” 1689

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, North Carolina — A teen who shot and killed her mother's boyfriend will not be charged, authorities said. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office said on Aug. 8, Chandra Nierman's 15-year-old daughter shot the 46-year-old male as he was attacking Nierman. Her other children, a 12-year-old son, and a 16-year-old daughter were there when the violence occurred. Sheriff's deputies said the man was threatening to "cut Nierman’s throat and kill everyone in the house."A release from authorities said:"Nierman’s twelve-year-old son retrieved a firearm and Nierman’s fifteen-year-old daughter took the gun from her brother and fired it twice, striking the deceased male in the chest. One of the fired rounds fragmented, grazing Nierman’s sixteen-year-old daughter in the leg."The 16-year-old was taken to a hospital and was released."Nierman suffered significant bruises and contusions from the assault," the release said. The investigation also revealed the deceased man had threatened Nierman several times previously, and four days before, he had assaulted Nierman and fired multiple rounds from a firearm inside the residence to threaten and terrorize her."The investigation further revealed that the deceased male, who had multiple firearms in the house and frequently carried one on his person, was a convicted felon and had two active domestic violence protection orders against him from two different women in Indiana and Ohio, although no domestic violence or assaults had been reported to law enforcement locally prior to the fatal shooting," the release said. "The deceased male has been positively identified as Steven Kelley, originally from Indiana."Based on the facts and the evidence, "it is the conclusion of the District Attorney’s Office that the shooting was justified and no charges will be filed," the release states. 1903
