VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. She also had defensive wounds from the attack. In addition to murder, the defendant is charged with assault on a child in regard to Mariah, and misdemeanor child cruelty involving her 6-year- old sister.RELATED: 7-year-old found dead in Oceanside home, father arrestedHe faces 26 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges. The children's grandmother made an emergency call shortly after 11 a.m. to report that she had just gone to the family's house in the 3500 block of Las Vegas Drive to pick up Mariah and her sister but had been unable to find the older girl, Oceanside police spokesman Tom Bussey said. The woman reported that her son -- the girls' father -- had been evasive about the whereabouts of his elder daughter and had blood on him, Bussey said.Officers went to the residence near Emerald Isle Golf Course and searched it, finding the victim's body in a bathroom. Detectives questioned Araujo and took him into custody on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Bussey said.Araujo's arraignment was initially scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed twice because he was being held in ``enhanced observation housing,'' according to court staff.Members of the girl's family gathered at the Vista courthouse last Friday and told reporters that Araujo was unstable and should not have been anywhere near his daughters.Karina Avina, Mariah's aunt, said Araujo did not have custody of the children as numerous Child Protective Services cases were open and ongoing against him, though the circumstances of those cases was unclear.``We want him to pay the max. That's what we want,'' Avina said. ``We don't want a few years. We don't want him to get out. He needs to pay his whole life.''Araujo is being held without bail. He's next due at the Vista courthouse on Aug. 14 for a readiness conference. 2267
VOLO, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois auto museum says it has no plans to stop displaying a Dodge Charger from the “Dukes of Hazzard” television show with the Confederate flag painted atop the vehicle. The flag is increasingly viewed as a symbol of racism. NASCAR has banned it and it's being removed from the Mississippi state flag. However, the Volo Auto Museum says the famed “General Lee” from the first season of the TV show isn’t going anywhere.Museum director Brian Grams tells the Northwest Herald that he would not remove it any more than he would remove Nazi memorabilia from the museum’s military exhibit.Grams calls the vehicle "a piece of history." 667

Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine on Sunday said President Donald Trump continuing to blame Democrats for the lack of permanent protections for young undocumented immigrants is a break with reality."He is either lying or he is completely delusional," Kaine said on CNN's "State of the Union."Trump on Friday said Democrats were responsible for there being no permanent fix on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, claiming, "The Democrats fought us, they just fought every single inch of the way. They did not want DACA in this bill."Kaine noted that then-President Barack Obama established the program, which has protected undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children from deportation, and that it is Trump who moved to end it."One person can save DACA," Kaine said. "If President Trump believes in DACA, all he has to do is retract his executive order from September where he broke a promise to Dreamers and said he was going to end the program."Trump has repeatedly railed against Democrats on DACA, with his comments on Friday coming as the latest such statement in a string of developments on the immigration program.Kaine said on Sunday that lawmakers would continue efforts to reach some kind of permanent shield for DACA recipients, but argued that without a consensus from the Republicans, a solution would require returning his party to power."We're going to keep looking for a solution, but the key is we do not have the support of the White House, we don't have the support of Republicans," Kaine said. "We either have to change their minds, or we have to get more Democrats in office." 1640
WASHINGTON (AP) — A former FBI lawyer plans to plead guilty to making a false statement in the first criminal case arising from U.S. Attorney John Durham’s investigation into the probe of ties between Russia and the 2016 Trump campaign. The case against Kevin Clinesmith is likely to be cheered by President Donald Trump and his supporters who've alleged wrongdoing in the FBI’s investigation into whether Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia. A watchdog report accused Clinesmith of altering an email to say former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was not a source for another government agency. “The fact is they spied on my campaign and they got caught,” Trump said at the White House on Friday. But the five-page charging document is limited in scope and does not allege criminal wrongdoing by anyone other than Clinesmith, nor does it offer evidence to support Trump’s assertions that the Russia probe was tainted by widespread political bias in the FBI. It does make clear that the FBI relied on Clinesmith’s own misrepresentations as it sought to renew its surveillance of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.Page has said he was. Clinesmith's lawyer told The Associated Press on Friday his client “deeply regrets" altering the email. 1257
