The outcome of the presidential election remained in doubt one day after polls closed throughout the United States.As of Wednesday afternoon, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden had a slight advantage over President Donald Trump in electoral college votes, but several key swing states had yet to be called.A candidate needs 270 electoral college votes in order to claim the presidency. But on Wednesday, the journal entered the world of politics.In an unusual and highly unprecedented fashion, the New England Journal of Medicine wrote a scathing rebuke of US leaders’ response to the coronavirus pandemic. While not formally offering any sort of endorsement, the journal referenced the upcoming election in its editorial. The piece did not name President Donald Trump or opponent Joe Biden by name.“Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences,” the journal wrote. “Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent."The editorial, titled “Dying in a Leadership Vacuum,” comes just 27 days before the US election. The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed four more players on the COVID-19 list, including quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. According to the Associated Press, a player is added to the reserve/COVID-19 list if they have tested positive for the virus or have been in close contact with someone who has it.The move comes a day after tight end Vance McDonald went on the list after testing positive following a 24-19 win at Dallas that pushed the Steelers to 8-0. The Gulf Coast appears to have dodged a bullet after Marco — once a tropical storm — collapsed into a post-tropical cyclone as it neared the Louisiana coast. But the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns that the region faces a more substantial threat in Hurricane Laura.Just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, the NHC reported that Laura had officially strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of over 74 mph. As part of the agency's 11 p.m.. ET update, the storm is expected to reach the Louisiana or Texas coast by late Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. By the time it reaches the coast, the NHC forecasts that the storm could be a Major Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 120 MPH.At 11 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Hurricane Laura had top winds of 90 MPH, and was located 405 miles southeast of Lake Charles, Louisiana. The storm is moving west-northwest at 17 MPH.The storm has already proven to be deadly.
