DETROIT — The former principal of Anchor Bay High School in Fair Haven, Michigan, is suing the district, saying he was forced out after giving a wooden penis to a departing employee as a joke. According to an attorney representing former principal Jack Stanton, a female security guard confiscated the wooden penis from a student who made it in workshop. On her last day, Stanton gave her back the wooden penis as a joke gift, and administration for the school district found out. “He’s told by the administration 'look we are going to make all this information public, we’re going to do a full investigation unless you resign in 24 hours,' ” said Stephen Lovell, who is representing Stanton. According to Lovell, Stanton claims he was told by administration the female security guard was offended. Now Stanton is suing for not getting that hearing, saying he was forced to resign under false pretenses that the female security guard was offended. “They did everything they could to keep him from getting that hearing. They didn’t want him to have that hearing because they knew, one: the school board sort of exonerated him for this because it is this private joke, two: they didn’t want the fact that they were lying about this stuff to come to light,” said Lovell. Attorney Timothy Mullins is representing the Anchor Bay School District. Mullins tells WXYZ the school did not push Stanton to from his job. “For a disciplinary action against an employee to be taken by the board he can request a closed session in front of the board, he knows that, that's a fact, and any statement to the contrary is a lie,” said Mullins. Mullins says even if the security guard was not offended it's still inappropriate conduct of a school principal. 1751

Democratic presidential contender New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is joining the chorus of legal challenges against the Trump administration's public charge rule that makes it harder for immigrants to obtain green cards if they've received or are likely to receive government benefits.A new lawsuit, led by New York state, argues that federal rule disregards congressional intent and decades of case law.De Blasio said Tuesday that "the ultimate city of immigrants" is fighting against "President Trump's xenophobic policies."This is at least the fourth lawsuit brought against the rule, which was announced earlier this month, including a multi-state challenge led by California, filed late last week. The rule means many green card and visa applicants could be turned down if they have low incomes or limited education, and have used benefits such as most forms of Medicaid, food stamps, and housing vouchers, because they'd be deemed more likely to need government assistance in the future.Defending the rule, acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli, said it will encourage "self-reliance and self-sufficiency for those seeking to come to or stay in the United States."New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is challenging the federal government in the latest lawsuit, said the rule specifically targets immigrants of color."Make no mistake. We are in the midst of another great challenge, and the Trump administration's thinly veiled efforts to only allow those who meet their narrow ethnic, racial, and economic criteria to enter is a clear violation of the laws and will be met with a very, very strong response," James said at a press conference Tuesday.James added that her parents were on public assistance and this rule will exclude black and brown people who would be elected to public office."It's important we understand this country is about equality for all individuals," she said. "We are fighting for the soul of our nation," James said. The lawsuit is filed in the Southern District of New York and is joined by Connecticut, Vermont, and New York City. 2121

Damien, 13, didn't believe it when he found out his new foster parent would be his math teacher, Finn Lanning."The previous two foster homes said that they were stable," the seventh-grader told CNN with a hint of disappointment in his voice. "I didn't think that this one would last either."Lanning and Damien first met at the beginning of the school year in August 2018 at the AXL Academy in Aurora, Colorado. The teacher said he knew right away that the boy was special. "He is well-mannered, polite and exceptionally smart," said Lanning, who asked that Damien's last name not be used. The teenager also faces a lot of challenges. When he was 8, Damien's kidneys failed, and he went on dialysis. He has moved through many foster homes over the years. This instability had kept him off the list to receive a kidney donation; his itinerant life raised the risk of transplant failure."Since his diagnosis, he has had to live in the hospital. One stay was a year. Others were a couple of months. That was the result (of) a lack of suitable placement," Lanning told CNN.Any guardian must be trained to meet Damien's needs. The boy spends more than 12 hours each day connected to a home dialysis machine and has a restrictive diet."No way!" Lanning recalls thinking of the demands that would face him. " 'This is not something that I'm going to do.' But as time went on, I felt a call to engage with it. I couldn't just not do it. I didn't see it as an option."In December, Lanning started training to care for Damien.A bond over food and mathDamien's only concern about living with his teacher? He was worried he might have to do a lot of homework, the math instructor told CNN with laughter. But Lanning said math is a subject Damien does well in."I'll be his teacher for another year before he's off to high school," he said. The two share a love of food and enjoy cooking together, but with his kidney problems, the boy can't eat a lot of their creations."His favorite thing to cook is seafood," Lanning said. "Hopefully soon he will be able to eat things."Damien looks forward to eating nachos from 7-Eleven."It's always been a favorite," the boy said. "And I want a hot and spicy chicken sandwich from McDonald's with extra mayonnaise."A new lifeLanning and Damien are adjusting to their new lives together after more than three months.Because of the boy's dietary restrictions, their food bill is high. "We spend about 0 a week on (groceries)," the teacher told CNN.Lanning has started a 2500

CLEVELAND — Police in northeast Ohio says they've collected multiple handguns in the past month that have been modified to turn the firearm into an automatic weapon. In one case, 20-year-old Toriano Leakes, Jr. of Cleveland was indicted on two counts of illegal possession of a machine gun.Bedford Police say the Glock handgun they confiscated from Leaks' car was modified to include a "select-fire auto sear." The device is also sometimes known as a "select fire switch."According to Justin Herdman, a US Attorney in the Northern District of Ohio, the modified handguns can fire 30 rounds in the span of five to six seconds.“It’s a newer thing hitting the internet because people think it’s cool,” said Assistant Bedford Police Chief Rick Suts.“The second you put that on a gun, it violates the National Firearms Act. It makes it a machine gun which is illegal," he said.Federal authorities say they've seen an increase in the modified handguns and they hope to crack down.“We have seen a significant uptick in people trying to acquire these switches manufactured mostly in China,” Herdman said. "...a message is being sent. If you have a machine gun in the Northern District of Ohio, we are going to prosecute you federally."The push is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at violent crime. 1319
