EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The pilot of a small plane made an emergency landing at a field and playground next to W. D. Hall Elementary School in El Cajon.The emergency landing happened around 4 p.m. Friday.The pilot says he took from Gillespie Field for a practice flight and was headed back to Gillespie for a landing when he ran out of fuel. He says his engine stopped, and he had to look for a place to land. He was able to glide onto the field safely.The plane hit a fence on the way down causing damage to a wing.The pilot says he has been flying for decades.No injuries were reported. 598

DULZURA, Calif. (KGTV) — Firefighters battled a vegetation fire near the U.S.-Mexico border, a day after crews pretreated the area for a fire burning south of the border.The fire was reported along Marron Valley Rd. near Dulzura Thursday, according to Cal Fire San Diego. By 6:30 p.m. the fire was estimated to have grown to about 80 acres and was 10 percent contained. No structures were immediately threatened, Cal Fire said.Air and group fire resources were attacking the flames, Cal Fire added.Wednesday night, Cal Fire made air drops near Tecate after flames from a brush fire crept up to the border from the Mexico side of the border. Thursday morning, Cal Fire reported a "significant decrease" in that fire. 723

(KGTV) - Vandals tagged two Catholic Churches in El Cajon with graffiti early Saturday morning, shocking parishioners."It's very devastating," says Father Daniel Shaba of the St. Peter's Chaldean Catholic Cathedral. "We fled persecution in Iraq, and here we are facing it again, in a place where we thought we wouldn't."Graffiti at St. Peter's, and also at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, featured swastikas, white power slogans, pentagrams, the Black Lives Matter acronym BLM, and the words "Biden 2020.""It was very confusing," says Father Shaba. "It had things that didn't have to do much with each other."Father Shaba found the graffiti early Saturday morning when he arrived at St. Peter's. He posted a video of it on twitter.Word of the vandalism spread fast, but help from the community came more quickly.By mid-morning, community members with power washers and paintbrushes helped Father Shaba clean up at St. Peter's. He told 10News everything had either been covered up or washed away by the afternoon and called the help a blessing."I'm very proud of them," Father Shaba says of his community. "We had an enormous amount of people come and see how they could help us in any way, shape, or form. But to also hold tight to Jesus."The Sheriff's Department confirmed they are investigating both instances. In a statement, they say no suspects have been identified, but there is "no tolerance for these crimes occurring in our communities."Father Shaba says surveillance cameras at his church caught high-quality footage of the vandals.
