BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The appreciation of renminbi, or China's currency yuan, will not help tackle the global economic imbalance, economists said here Saturday.The idea that yuan's appreciation would cure global economic imbalance was not going to happen, Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, said at the China Development Forum 2010.To solve trade imbalance, countries such as the United States and China should seek measures to encourage domestic consumption, improve social well-being and reform pension system, instead of sticking to the exchange rate issue, Gurria said.The exchange rate adjustment, especially between the United States and China, would not help cut the U.S. trade deficit, while one way to tackle the problem is to loose restrictions on high-technology exports to China, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz said.Since China overtook Germany to become the world's largest exporter, the country is facing increasing criticism for devaluating the yuan to earn artificial price advantages. Some U.S. senators have recently ratcheted up pressure on yuan appreciation and urged the government to label China as currency manipulator."If the U.S. government names China as a currency manipulator, quite unfortunately, it will hurt the bilateral relations at least in short and medium term," said Li Daokui, director of the Center for China in the World Economy of Tsinghua University."The two countries should be cooperative to solve the problem, while naming China as a currency manipulator will be no help," Li said."After all, it will not be in the interests of the United States, China and the whole world if the two countries' disputes escalate into a trade war," he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's National Marine Forecasting Station on Tuesday issued an alarm on sea ice as it was developing fast off the country's eastern coast.     In the following week, the floating chunks of ice could extend up to 90 nautical miles off the coast of Baohai Sea and 25 nautical miles in the northern Yellow Sea. The ice thickness could measure up to 40 cm, the station said.     The station warned of threats to port infrastructure, transportation and maritime operations. The most severe icing situation in the past 30 years in the coast off Shandong Province continued to worsen amid cold snaps. BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will adopt stricter measures to boost energy conservation this year to meet the goal set by an important five-year plan, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, said Wednesday."It's the last and decisive year for us to realize the goals set by our country's 11th Five-Year Plan," Xie said at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature."The current energy conservation situation lags far behind the goal set in our plan and our task is still formidable," said Xie, one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks.Under the 11th Five-Year Plan ending this year, China pledged to cut energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent, or four percent each year, but consumption fell by a margin much smaller than the set target during the past four years.The per unit GDP energy consumption fell only 14.38 percent from the 2005 level.Xie said the Chinese government will enact a series of measures this year to boost energy conservation, including the introduction of an accountability mechanism for provincial governments and tight control of projects of high energy consumption and high pollution.China announced in November it aimed to reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with 2005 levels.
