SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are three year-round homeless tents set up in San Diego. Their long-term future could hinge on budget hearings that began Wednesday at City Hall.Several hundred of our homeless have beds, showers, warmth, a refrigerator for their medicine, and security for awhile. That could end, though.The shelter on Sports Arena Blvd. provides solely for veterans.RELATED: Clairemont residents hope to stop homeless housing projectAnother near Father Joe's Village at 15th and Commercial is open for women and children. The Alpha Project tent, a few blocks over, welcomes men, women, and dogs.Valeria Burton has been here six months.  "It's safe. I would be on the street, sleeping in my tent on concrete with my blanket and cardboard," Burton said.RELATED: County board candidate may model "foster homeless" conceptThe veterans and women and children locations have a few openings most nights. Alpha Project, though, is at capacity every night, with waiting lists of 50 to 200, depending on the weather."Someone doesn't show up for bed check and that bed's rolled up; our outreach team goes out at 9 o'clock down the street and people cue up. Money currently comes from Housing Commission reserves but what happens after that runs out?Robert Clune said he hit rock bottom after being laid off from Nassco, living on the street for years. "23 people got laid off at Nassco. I was one of them and when I hit, I didn't get up and dust myself off and keep pushing," Clune said. "I basically just laid there."It's different now. "This right here is hope, for a lot of people and the process is good for me; the doors are just opening," Clune said. He's been a painter, a cement mason, a laborer. He said he's ready to work again.  The San Diego City Council should have the budget ready by June. 2198

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is spreading its message of turning faith into action this weekend.They'll host a convention to teach other congregations ways to incorporate community service into their regular programming."We have thousands of people on the street every day, doing something in our community," says Pastor Miles McPherson. "It’s a great testament to the hearts of the people in our church."Rock Church says its members have completed 2.4 million hours of community service over the last 10 years, with an estimated economic value of million."It’s one thing for people to sit in a room and listen to a sermon, it’s another thing for people to go out and do it," says McPherson. "That’s why we call it a "Do Something Church."Leaders from 73 congregations across 13 states will be at the Do Something Conference this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of children and their families enjoyed a Christmas miracle Saturday, as Toys for Joy delivered smiles across the county.About 8,000 - 9,000 people made their way through the lines outside four locations packed with toys as part of the event, at Lincoln High School, Cajon Valley Middle School, Castle Park High School, and Guajome Park Academy in Vista.At Lincoln High School, some families camped out for the event, waking up to toys and more generous donations. Every child under the age of 11 will walk away with a brand new toy. Families got their own holiday miracle, as other stations offer gently used clothing and also bring home groceries.Toys for Joy has been a free community event for 23 years and is hosted by The Rock Church. 776
