CLIVE, Iowa — A Des Moines woman was charged with attempted murder after she told police that she intentionally ran over a 14-year-old girl because she believed the teenager was Mexican, authorities said Friday.Natalia Miranda suffered a concussion and severe bruising in the attack but is expected to make a full recovery.Clive Police Chief Mike Venema said Friday during a news conference that Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, admitted to steering her SUV onto a sidewalk on Dec. 9 in the suburban Des Moines community and running over the teenager, who was walking to school to watch a basketball game. Franklin then fled the scene.Franklin made several derogatory statements about Latinos during a police interview in which she admitted she intentionally ran over the teenager, police said.“I want to say in the strongest terms possible that there is no place in our community ... for this type of hatred or violence,” Venema said.Natalia was hospitalized for two days.“I don’t remember the impact,” the teenager 1034

Even with businesses starting to reopen, we're getting a better picture of not just who is still out of work but how much money was lost.About .3 trillion is estimated to be lost by American workers, according to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) and Oxford Economics. That includes people who still have their jobs but may have been furloughed or had pay cuts. The estimates are that only between 11 and 20% of communities will have employment return to what it used to be.“Employers don’t have to respond to a generalized since of fear, so if you say I’m just not comfortable until there is a vaccine or I’m just not comfortable until you can give me certainty, what we're learning is they don’t have to do that and many of them won’t do that and I would just caution employees to realize that we are now for good or for bad in a buyer’s market,” said Johnny Taylor, Jr., the president and CEO of SHRM. SHRM found only 31% of employees said they were more productive working remotely, while 69% said they were less productive or the same. The group cautions employees about demanding remote work.“I’ve encouraged CEOs who've called me. You just have to be true to what your culture is. It is ok to say to an employee even if you are more productive at home, I want as senior management our culture to be more of a face to face one,” said Taylor.OSHA already requires companies to provide safe workplaces, and that includes new guidance about the coronavirus. 1486

Dozens of black-clad protesters wearing protective riot geared gathered outside of Yuen Long station in Hong Kong on Wednesday. The protesters aimed laser pointers at police and chanted "Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times". Around 50 riot police arrived to disperse the protesters, who had gathered earlier at the suburban train station to stage a sit-in protest to mark a month since a violent attack there by masked assailants on supporters of the anti-government movement. The assailants from the attack on 21 July are suspected to have had organised crime links, in what was a shocking escalation of the city's summer of protest last month.Riot police arrived at the station near the end of the commemoration, apparently preparing to confront the protesters, some of whom had set up barricades on the road outside. Police with riot shields faced off at the station entrance with the black-clad protesters, who sprayed a firehose and spread oil on the floor to slow their approach. 1008

DENVER — Twelve inches of snow on the first weekend of summer. That sounds extreme, even by Colorado standards, but that was the 24-hour snowfall estimate Saturday morning for pockets of the northern central mountains, 236

DETROIT — Jaden Smith is helping the residents of Flint, Michigan, through a new initiative. The rapper, actor and co-founder of the eco-friendly company JUST Water has partnered with a local Flint church to deploy a mobile water treatment system. The system is called "The Water Box" and it filters out lead and additional contaminants in water, according to a press release. Flint's water crisis began in April 2014 after the city's water source was switched from the Detroit River to the Flint River, which resulted in city-wide lead contamination of public drinking water. First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Flint has been on the front line of the battle to restore drinkable water in the city. The church has also given out more than 5 million bottles of water to local residents. In 2018, the free bottled water program set up by the state was ended under former Gov. Rick Snyder. However, a recent announcement by newly appointed Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer states that the program will be 1020
