NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- The foreign ministers of China and 42 African countries, or their representatives, held their second political consultation in New York on Thursday. The Chairperson of the African Union ( AU) Commission was invited to the consultation.The meeting was co-chaired by the People's Republic of China and the Arab Republic of Egypt, the two co-chair countries of FOCAC.The Chinese and African sides had an in-depth exchange of views on strengthening China-Africa cooperation in international affairs, making progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and promoting peace and security in Africa. They reached the following consensus:1. The two sides applauded FOCAC's important role in guiding the comprehensive and fast growth of China-Africa friendship over the past 10 years since FOCAC's inception, and its contribution to South-South cooperation, common development and the building of a harmonious world. They reaffirmed the commitment of FOCAC member countries to improving the institutional building of FOCAC, strengthening practical cooperation in various areas within the FOCAC framework, enriching the Forum and promoting in-depth development of the new type of China-Africa strategic partnership.2. The two sides expressed satisfaction with the comprehensive implementation of the follow-up actions of the FOCAC Beijing Summit. TOKYO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku said Friday that China and Japan, the two major economic powers in Asia, need to work toward improving bilateral relations."It is true that Japan-China relations have shown signs of deterioration," Sengoku, Japan's top government spokesman, said at a press conference, adding that efforts were needed to deepen bilateral relations between the two countries.The comments came as the Naha, Okinawa, prosecutor's office said Friday it will release Zhan Qixiong, the 41-year-old Chinese fishing boat captain who has been held for more than two weeks.Two Japan Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler collided in waters off China's Diaoyu Islands on Spet. 7.The next day, the Japan Coast Guard illegally seized the Chinese trawler and detained its captain and 14 fishermen on board, drawing strong protests from the Chinese government and its people.The Japanese released the fishermen and boat last week but held the captain. China has repeatedly urged Japan to unconditionally send back the captain to avoid additional damage to their bilateral ties.According to local media, Zhan was to leave Japan on Friday. BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China Merchants Bank said Friday its profit rose 57.4 percent to 20.59 billion yuan (3.07 billion U.S. dollars) in the first three quarters from one year earlier.The jump in net profit was mainly due to higher interest income, the bank said in its business report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange.Also, total assets of the mid-sized lender had expanded to 2.36 trillion yuan by the end of September, up 14.10 percent from the end of 2009.Additionally, the bank's non-performing loan ratio was 0.64 percent, down 0.18 percentage points from the beginning of this year.Shares of the bank were down 2.41 percent at 14.57 yuan in Shanghai and down 1.13 percent at 21.95 HK dollars in Hong Kong Friday.
