LAS VEGAS, the United States, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Top-quality light manufactured products and consumer goods have been on display at the China Brand Show 2010 held in Las Vegas since Sunday, as part of China's bid to further enhance the profiles of Chinese-made products and promote closer Sino-U.S. trade and economic relations.Co-hosted by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), and the Zhejiang and Fujian Provincial Governments, the exhibition is being held from Aug. 8 through Aug. 11. "Also, the show is more and more attractive to Chinese enterprises."The show occupies a total exhibition area of 4,500 sq m and hosts 229 carefully selected top-brand Chinese firms from 18 provinces and cities in China, including Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangsu, and Guangdong.The exhibits, including light manufactured products, consumer and household electronic goods, feature high-technology and ingenious design and represent a new dimension of China's latest economic achievements. This year's show has set records in scale, exhibitors and exhibit varieties.The show has served as a platform where corporate image can be built, products showcased and positive conditions for cultivating well-known Chinese brands created, the organizers said.For the past four years in a row, the show has been hosted in Las Vegas, one of the ideal venues for exhibitors around the world. BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and floods sweeping through south China have left at least 118 people dead and 47 missing since July 1, said a statement on the Civil Affairs Ministry website Wednesday.By 4 p.m. Wednesday, more than 32.3 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods, the ministry said.About 101,000 houses were destroyed and close to 1.1 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at 22.2 billion yuan (about 3.3 billion U.S. dollars).In Anhui Province alone, at least four people had been confirmed dead since July 8, whereas direct economic losses amounted to 2.3 billion yuan.The ministry had allocated 3,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, and 20,000 quilts to Anhui.In Hubei Province, rain-triggered floods and disasters have left 28 people dead and two others missing since July 3, the provincial civil affairs administration said Wednesday.Rains and floods have disrupted lives of 9.24 million people, forcing more than 256,700 people to be relocated. Nearly 34,000 houses toppled and 923,700 hectares of crops were damaged, incurring 7.64 billion yuan in direct economic losses.In Yunnan Province, at least three people were killed and more than 1,000 residents were affected after a downpour hit Hongqiao Township in Lijiang City Wednesday.

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Monday approved an education reform plan for the next decade, which aims for greater education investment and fairer distribution of resources.Presided over by the CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao,a meeting of the Politburo approved the final version of the Medium- and Long-term National Educational Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020).The Politburo, the CPC's top decision-making body, said in a statement that education was the fundamental cause for the revitalization of China and social progress in the future.China had established the largest education system in the world since the founding of the People's Republic, which ensured education rights for millions of people, the statement said.The government promote educational fairness as a basic policy and increase education investment in rural, remote and ethnic minority areas, the Politburo agreed.According to the plan, government investment will increase steadily to support the education sector, with the ratio of education expenditure in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) to be 4 percent by 2012.In 2008, the ratio stood at 3.48 percent, compared with the average international level of 4.5 percent.The plan, released at the end of February for public scrutiny, was seen as setting the tone for the development of the education sector in China, which has long suffered from funding shortages and unbalanced development in rural and urban areas.The plan said giving students fairer access to quality education would be a "fundamental policy," with more public education resources for rural, impoverished and ethnic areas.The reforms would also encourage private organizations and individuals to play a greater role in the education system, said the statement.The plan took one year and nine months to draw up, during which public submissions were invited on two separate occasions.
