SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- New census data shows that less than a third of San Diegans have their mortgages paid off.Of the more than 228,000 houses located in the city, 60,402 housing units have no mortgage.The numbers were released following a five-year study by the Census Bureau. The study was conducted between 2012 and 2016.Of the cities and neighborhoods with more than 1,000 homes, Harbison Canyon took the top spot for most homes without a mortgage at 41 percent followed by Bostonia also at 41 percent and Coronado at 39 percent. As far as cities and neighborhoods with the least amount of homes without mortgages, San Diego County Estates takes first place at 13 percent followed by Poway at 20 percent and Rancho San Diego at 20 percent. For those trying to buy a home, the county does offer programs to help with down payments and closing costs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man is dead and three people have been detained for questioning after a reported shooting overnight in Paradise Hills.San Diego Police arrived at a home in the 6200 block of Childs Avenue just after 1 a.m. Saturday over reports of a shooting. Officers arrived to find a 20-year-old, later identified as Tyshawn Powell, lying in the driveway of the home and a family member performing CPR.Fire-Rescue arrived to continue life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.Police said the man had been shot at least once. Neighbors were interviewed about the reported gunshots in the area and as a result, an adult male and female, and a juvenile male were detained. According to police, Angelo Roshon Richardson Jr., 19, and Mikayla Ann Castillo, 18, as well as a 17-year-old were detained. Richardson was booked into jail for murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm while Castillo was booked into jail for being an accessory to murder. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New numbers show just how quickly housing has become unaffordable in San Diego county.Housing received a thumbs-down because the Housing Affordability Index for San Diego County decreased from 26% in December 2017 to 24% in December 2018. In 2012, more than 45% of county residents could buy a median-priced home.The report on housing affordability was part of the annual Quality of Life Dashboard released by the Equinox Project, The Nonprofit Institute at University of San Diego. "The change is steep and following the state trends," said Christiana DeBenedict of The Nonprofit Institute.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsAccording to the report, 38% of local homeowners devote more than a third of their income to their mortgage. The renters' situation isn't much better. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in San Diego County, 57% of people pay more than 30% of their income on rent. San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties have the highest proportion of people paying over 30% of their income on rent.DeBenedict says add it all up, and it hurts locals employers trying attract and keep talent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Monday arrested a suspect they say beat a 72-year-old man with a crowbar during a carjacking. Police say Daniel Dubois, 33, was arrested for the incident. According to police, the incident happened on the 5000 block of Kesling Street in Clairemont Mesa East around 9:47 a.m. Monday. Police say the 72-year-old drove up to his home only to find a man trying to break into his garage with a crowbar. RELATED: Robbers beat, rob 87-year-old Clairemont man during home invasion, police sayWhen the man tried to confront the suspect, police say the suspect attacked the 72-year-old with the crowbar before driving away with his Toyota Sienna. Police say the victim suffered major head injuries in the attack. The incident happened less than a week after an 87-year-old man was beaten by three men who broke into his Clairemont home. The victim in that attack says he was working on a ceiling fan with the door open when the suspects stormed in. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Point Loma High School students welcomed gender-neutral homecoming royalty this week, eliminating the traditional roles of king and queen.At Friday night’s homecoming game, two senior boys were selected as kings. Most students at Point Loma High School said they support the change.Associated Student Body president Ila Komasa told 10News previous homecoming kings and queens were couples. This year, she wanted to make it more individualized. “We didn’t believe the couple aspect applied to what homecoming court meant to us and what it should represent for the students," Komasa said.Komasa was hopeful students would be given the opportunity to vote for anyone they wanted.“We made the decision to individually elect and nominate two students from each grade level as homecoming court and then for seniors, homecoming royalty.” It’s an effort to make homecoming more inclusive, no longer focusing on one’s high school relationship status, rather the impact made on peers. The students got the idea after two senior boys were voted to win the prom royalty titles. 1093
