SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Marine biologists and other experts are at Fiesta Island Tuesday morning to try to determine what caused the death of a large whale.The gray whale was discovered by lifeguards on the shore of Blacks Beach Monday at about 11 a.m.The dead whale was eventually towed from the Torrey Pines area to Fiesta Island, arriving at 3:30 p.m.Officials with the National Marine Fisheries were called to Fiesta Island to perform a necropsy.After Tuesday's examination, the whale is expected to be transported to the Miramar Landfill.  552

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Immigration rights advocates in San Diego are worried about the impact of President Trump's promised mass deportation. In a pair of tweets Monday night, President Trump said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement would next week "begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States."Benjamin Prado is the program coordinator for the U.S. Mexico Border Program with the American Friends Service Committee. Prado says the tweets are causing concern and confusion.“We’re not sure because of the tweets, they are just so random, and very limited in scope and depth," said Prado. ICE agents carried out an immigration crack down at the Zion Supermarket in Clairemont Mesa back in February. Twenty-six workers were detained. "Our communities have experienced all kinds of things, whether it be on transportation, roving patrols, that border patrol has done in the past,”said Prado. He said his members started watching their communities long before the president's latest tweet. "Our community members are mobilizing, have been mobilizing even before this tweet, and have been out in the community, making sure Immigration and Customs Enforcement doesn’t go and separate families," said Prado. Immigration attorney Edward Orendain said the enforcement action would likely target people who have skipped out on their hearings or who have been given final deportation orders. "Apparently, this is going to be targeted more toward people who already have outstanding deportation orders or orders of deportation. Initially, that may seem to be a good thing, but I know, because I have several clients, that a significant number of the people who already have final orders of deportation are under supervised release, which means local immigration already knows of them, but they’re allowed to stay in the United States usually for humanitarian purposes," said Orendain. Orendain says he has one client, who was given final deportation orders, but is on supervised release because she has an ill son who is a U.S. citizen. "She's been removed a couple of times, but she has a U.S citizen child who has severe medical and developmental issues and really can’t get the standard of care in his home country,so the government knows about her, knows that she has final orders of removal or deportation, but allows her to stay here as a humanitarian issue," said Orendain. It's estimated more than 200,000 undocumented workers are in San Diego County. Orendain said he hopes the president's tweet has more to do with politics than any actual plan. "Maybe it was a way to stoke the fires in his base, but because of the office that he holds, it has to be given attention." 2758

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Isabel Rosales was brutally attacked and nearly killed by her husband in January 2018."It was life or death, my ex husband attacked me in front of my kids," said Rosales.Rosales was married for 16 years. She and her ex-husband moved from Chicago to San Diego for a fresh start. But Rosales says the abuse only got worse."Sexual abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse, everything," said RosalesShortly after their 16-year anniversary Rosales told her Ex-husband she wanted a divorce. She barely made it out of the family home alive."I was getting ready to go to work and we had been arguing...his behavior had been kind of erratic over the last few weeks. I thought he was agreeing with me when he said it ends here. I thought he was getting his suitcase and leaving. He followed me into the bathroom and he stabbed me. I ran into the kid's room and he stabbed me in front of the kids who were sleeping. I was able to push him out of the way and I ran out of the house. Before I ran out of the house though he attacked me again at the front door. I knew if I didn't make it out of the door it was over and by the grace of God the door opened."Rosales was in the ICU at UCSD for three days with a breathing tube. She says she fought to stay alive for her three children and her mother, who was killed by her boyfriend in 2011."My mother was murdered by her boyfriend in Mexico. And my ex-husband attacked me in a very similar way."Rosales says she had what her mother did not. Help. Hers came in the form of Operation for Hope, a San Diego non-profit that helps provide emergency services to victims of domestic abuse. Rosales was given emergency shelter and money to pay for a divorce attorney."It helped me have a future. It gave me exactly what it promises- HOPE."Rosales has this advice for other survivors."I was ashamed to ask for help. I didn't know services like this exist. I am here to tell you there's great courage in asking for help and taking that first step... I hope and I pray to change one other person's world out there by sharing my story. My heart aches for those who do not make it like my mom, for those who do not know how to get out or where to go, for those that think an abusive relationship is normal. Anything is possible and each and every person is deserving of a beautiful and safe life... I am happy now. These tears are tears of joy."During the pandemic, domestic violence incidents have increased. From January to June 2020, there were 8,495 domestic violence incidents reported to law enforcement in San Diego County, as compared to 8,235 during the same period in 2019; a 3% increase from the prior year according to the San Diego County District Attorney's office.
