SPRING VALLEY (CNS) - A 48-year-old man who went missing during an outing near Sweetwater Reservoir two weeks ago has been found dead, authorities reported Friday.A search-and-rescue team came across the body of Edward Leonard in a remote spot near the Spring Valley-area manmade lake on Thursday morning, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department.There was no immediate evidence of criminal involvement in Leonard's death, authorities said.Leonard had been missing since July 2, when a friend dropped him off at the reservoir to go fishing, officials said. A ruling on his cause of death was on hold pending autopsy results. 642

September Buys, a teacher in Michigan, says she doesn't really like garage sales, and that should tell you just how far she will go to help her students this year.Buys, an art teacher at Crossroads Middle School in Grand Rapids, said she was feeling helpless about all the uncertainty surrounding the school year-- and decided to channel her frustration into cleaning."I just started cleaning out my closet, because that felt better, just to let some things go," she said. "I made a pile, and then I moved onto the girls’ closet, and then I moved onto the toy room, and just this pile grew and grew and grew.”The idea came to her to hold a garage sale to give away the items. She also reached out to the community on Facebook, asking if others had items they wanted to contribute as well.Instead of selling what's been collected, Buys asked people to donate art supplies or purchase items off the Amazon wishlist she created to help her students.“I think it’s really, really important for people to connect with each other and be kind to each other and if you have something extra, why not share it? Things are things… I think what’s more important for me right now is to make sure that my students are cared for and that they have the things they need to feel like they can express what’s going on, they can kind of get some of that stuff out, and the more materials and stuff I have for my students, the better.”Buys plans to take all the art supplies to create individual 'art kits' for her students."We always need help with purchasing supplies – but this year especially, whether the kids are at home or whether they’re in person, they’re not going to be able to share supplies in the same way. I can’t take one package of pencils and put it in the middle of the table for kids to share anymore. Some of San Diego's fastest growing companies will add more than 600 new jobs over the next five years.The hiring, however, is starting now. California awarded 15 San Diego companies tax credits in exchange for investing locally and adding jobs. Overall, the jobs will pay an average salary of about ,000.The state launched what's called the California Competes tax credit in 2013 to combat lower cost states, like Texas, from recruiting companies out of California."We need people, we need equipment, we need to improve our facilities, and that's really helping us do that," said Dave Twining, chief operating officer of Planck Aerosystems, which got a 0,000 credit. The company just expanded into a Midway warehouse large enough for a net for drone testing. In exchange for the credit, Planck is committing to add 23 jobs at an average salary of ,000. Twining said the company needs workers that run the gamut, from office administrators to engineers. Companies are also required to invest or expand in California. BOFI, for Bank of the Internet, got a million credit for its commitment to expand and add 160 jobs in San Diego over the next five years. The jobs will pay an average salary also ,000. But the credits are not just for finance and tech companies. Take Bold Brew Coffee, which recent SDSU grads Jack Doheny and Jake Solomon launched last year. The state is granting them a ,000 tax credit in exchange for expanding locally, and hiring seven workers at an average salary of ,000 a year. "It's Jack and I running the show, and that's why we desperately need some employees to help us out," Solomon said. Several Kentucky teachers won't be going to work Friday after the state legislature approved changes to their pension on Thursday.Educators, who are furious over the pension issue, called out of work in protest. At least nine counties have canceled school, the Kentucky Democrats tweeted early Friday. Kentucky has 120 counties.The bill, which overhauls the state's pension, passed mostly on party lines and heads to Gov. Matt Bevin, who supports reforming the system. State leaders say it's critical to fix the pension crisis, which ranks as one of the worst in the US.Kentucky teachers have opposed changes to their pension, which was in Senate Bill 1 that proposed reducing benefits. 694
