SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's Vector Control Program will conduct two mosquito-fighting larvicide drops this week after recent heat waves and high tides increased insect populations, the county announced today.Vector Control staff will conduct their fifth aerial application of the summer on Wednesday, using a helicopter to drop batches of a granular larvicide on about 48 rivers, streams, ponds and other waterways.Vector Control uses aerial applications to abate mosquitoes that could potentially transmit West Nile virus, according to the county. On Saturday, staff will conduct a smaller drop on portions of Los Penasquitos Lagoon and San Elijio Lagoon in Cardiff to reduce saltwater mosquito numbers.High tides can expand lagoon water into areas that are normally dry, creating new pockets of stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed, especially when combined with rising temperatures. The county treats more than 1,000 acres of waterways, stretching from Chula Vista in the south to Fallbrook in the North and Oceanside in the west to Lakeside in the east.County to Conduct Two Mosquito Larvicide Drops This Week Eds: County spokesperson Gig Conaughton can be reached at (858) 692-7214. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Gulls coach Dallas Eakins was Monday named the coach of its NHL parent team, the Anaheim Ducks.Eakins coached the Gulls throughout their four seasons in the American Hockey League, guiding them to a 154-95-23 record and three Calder Cup playoff berths. They reached the Western Division finals in the recently concluded 2018-19 season. The Gulls had the best record in the AHL's Pacific Division since its inception in the 2015-16 season. The 52-year-old Eakins called his hiring as the Ducks' coach ``a tremendous honor for my family.''``I am truly humbled,'' Eakins said. ``It was a privilege to serve as head coach of the San Diego Gulls during our first four seasons and I look forward to build off that success here in Anaheim.''Eakins replaces Randy Carlyle, who was fired on Feb. 10. General manager Bob Murray was the interim coach for the remainder of the season. The Ducks were 35-37-10 in the 2018-19 season, finishing sixth in the NHL's eight-team Pacific Division and missing the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since the 2011-12 season.``Dallas is an outstanding head coach who has worked well with our players since joining the organization four years ago,'' Murray said. ``He is a tremendous leader and strategist, and deserves this opportunity.''Eakins coached the NHL's Edmonton Oilers to a 36-63-14 record from the start of the 2013-14 season until being fired 31 games into the 2014-15 season after Edmonton got off to a 7-19-5 start. He coached the AHL's Toronto Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, to a 157-114-4 record from 2009-13, guiding them to the 2012 Calder Cup Final, where they lost to the Norfolk Admirals.Eakins was also an assistant coach with the Marlies in the 2005-2006 season and with the Maple Leafs from 2006-2008.Eakins played 16 seasons of professional hockey as a defenseman, mainly in the AHL. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego-based medical equipment manufacturer ResMed Corp. has agreed to pay more than .5 million to resolve allegations that it paid kickbacks to suppliers, sleeps labs and other health care providers in exchange for referrals and prescriptions for its products, the Department of Justice announced Wednesday. The government accused ResMed of violating the Anti-Kickback Statute of the False Claims Act by providing free or below-cost medical equipment to companies in several states. Court documents state that ResMed's products -- which treat sleep apnea and other sleep disorders -- were provided to companies that in some cases began writing prescriptions to their patients entirely for ResMed equipment.Prosecutors say some examples of ResMed kickbacks included free home sleep testing devices, free or below-cost positive airway pressure masks and diagnostic machines, and free telephone call center and patient outreach services that allowed the companies to order resupplies for sleep apnea patients.RELATED: San Diego suing SDG&E for allegedly delaying pure water projectThe settlement agreement resolves five lawsuits filed by whistleblowers, who will collectively receive around .2 million out of the total settlement."Paying any type of illegal remuneration to induce patient referrals undermines the integrity of our nation's health care system," said Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt. "When a patient receives a prescription for a device to treat a health care condition, the patient deserves to know that the device was selected based on quality of care considerations and not on unlawful payments from equipment manufacturers." 1679
