SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five people were injured after a crash near Scripps Ranch Sunday afternoon.The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pomerado Road and Avenue of Nations near Thurgood Marshall Middle School.Police said an 18-year-old driver and one passenger in a gray BMW were heading home from a basketball tournament when they swerved into oncoming traffic.They crashed into a white Chevy with four people inside, all between the ages of 70 and 90.The driver of the Chevy sedan, a 90-year-old woman, died from her injuries, police said.At least five ambulances were requested at the scene, according to authorities.The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but the driver told police he had mechanical trouble with his brakes. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident, police said.   917

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Wednesday released bodycam video following a deadly officer-involved shooting in Oak Park in late January. The graphic video opens with San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit explaining what led up to the shooting. According to Nisleit, officers spotted Toby Diller, 31, on the 2900 block of 54th Street with an open container of alcohol. RELATED: Officers, suspect identified in deadly Oak Park shootingNisleit says officers activated lights on their patrol car and tried to make contact with Diller, but he ran away. Video of the incident shows the officers, later identified as Benjamin Downing and Devion Johnson, running after Diller before catching up to him. At that point, Nisleit says Diller resisted arrest, grappling with police on the ground. "The officers gave him verbal commands to stop resisting, but he refused to cooperate,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs previously said. That’s when Johnson opened fire on the 31-year-old suspect. Diller died at the scene. Johnson has been with the department for two years and Downing for five. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - New technology is offering schools another weapon in the battle against vaping and e-cigarettes.At this week's National Conference on Education, Soter Technologies is promoting its FlySense machine. It's similar to a smoke detector but tuned to sense vaping byproducts in the air."We can determine if a flavor is in the air, if THC is in the air, or if nicotine is in the air," says CEO Derek Peterson. "The device can determine what's in the air, whether someone's using a jewel pen, vaping, or an old fashioned e-cigarette, or a regular cigarette."The device then sends an alert to cell phones of nearby teachers and administrators so they can respond. Peterson says they've already sold 7,000 FlySense devices around the country, including 1,000 in California.It's helping schools fight a growing epidemic. A recent study in the Journal of American Medicine says 5.3 million teenagers admit to using e-cigarettes. The CDC says they're harmful to kids and adults and can be addictive."Kids get hooked on the vaping pens because of the nicotine content," says Peterson. "They think it's cool. And then before you know it, they're trapped. They're hooked on the nicotine. They can't get off."In addition to the FlySense machine, Peterson's company gives schools an educational curriculum to teach the dangers of nicotine and vaping. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday plans to screen people returning from restricted countries.American citizens, legal permanent residents, and their immediate families returning to the United States will be required to arrive at one of 13 airports for enhanced screening for coronavirus.“While the overall risk of serious infection from the coronavirus to the general public remains low at this time, the Trump administration is taking these aggressive measures to keep the risk low, requiring all Americans returning from affected areas in Europe to be funneled through 13 airports for screening upon their return to the U.S.,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “To minimize disruptions to travelers, TSA, CBP, and air carriers are working to identify qualifying passengers before their scheduled flights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Pacific Beach mother Sandy Algra says her number one job is keeping her child safe, something she wasn’t able to do a few months ago.Algra and her 3-year-old son were at Liberty Station Park when he was scratched by a dirty needle, sending him to the emergency room. Algra says he underwent an infectious disease consultation and will require HIV and Hepatitis C tests every six months.“Right now I’m trying to channel and redirect the anger that I feel about what happened to him, that I wasn’t able to keep him safe," said Algra.She's created a petition to designate San Diego’s playgrounds for children only; adults are only allowed if they’re accompanied by a child.Similar ordinances already exist in New York and Florida, people who violate them can face fines. "I think that most people can use common sense and understand that an adult is not meant to be living under a slide, or sitting on a swing doing drugs or otherwise, that's not what these playgrounds are designed for," said Algra. The petition has over 1,000 signatures and has garnered support from the Pacific Beach Planning Group and Pacific Beach Town Council.Algra plans to eventually bring the petition to San Diego City Council.
