WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. Non-coronavirus patients will be treated on board. A similar ship is being sent to New York City. The FEMA official said the projected need for hospital beds in California is five times greater than it is in Washington. A leading contender for the vacant United Nations Ambassador role made a not so subtle pitch for the job in a Fox News interview on Wednesday.John James, a former Michigan Republican Senate candidate, said "of course" he wants to be the next US ambassador to the UN, during the interview. The Iraq War veteran emphasized his military experience and business background and called it an "honor" to be considered for the position. But he's not the only figure in the running as President Donald Trump considers candidates to replace Nikki Haley after his initial pick, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, 623
A change is coming to some people’s life and health insurance policies that will make them more expensive. Prudential recently announced it will consider e-cigarette users the same as traditional smokers. Smokers pay on average about 50% more per year for life insurance. Depending on the policy, that’s between 0 and 0 more. Some other companies were already charging vapers more. The president of Consumer Watchdog, Jamie Court, says he doesn’t necessarily disagree with the practice. “Well you know I’m no fan of the insurance industry but I think they're probably right in this circumstance and you know vaping is a relatively unknown quantity we don’t have any longitudinal studies to show what happens in 10-20-30-40 years to the lungs of people who vape,” said Court. “But there has been some evidence that people have significant scarring.”Court says it’s a little more of a gray area when it comes to health insurance. Right now, plans under the Affordable Care Act don’t charge e-cigarette and tobacco users the same. Some states don’t allow smokers to be charged more. At the same time, the Insurance Information Institute reports some companies have vaping in the non-smoking category because there isn’t enough data yet on the health effects. But with recent injuries and deaths from vaping, some companies now consider it a higher risk factor. 1375
