Kings Island will not open for Winterfest Monday night, due to concerns over inclement winter weather, according to a Tweet from the company. Ohio is in the midst of back to back winter storms. On Sunday, areas around Cincinnati, which is 20 miles south of Ohio's Kings Island, had 2-3 inches of snow. Areas around Kings Island on Monday could also see another couple inches of snow, in addition to some freezing drizzle. The park stated that tickets purchased for Monday night will still be valid for any other night while Winterfest is open, through December 31. 576
In one of the busiest subway stations in New York—amidst the bell ringers, toy salesmen, and those espousing religious beliefs—sits a woman wearing a leopard print coat and a smile, hoping to get the attention of people in her own, subdued way. She has a sign that reads, “Welcome to Grammar Table.” Ellen Jovin is a self-professed grammar nerd. "Conjugating verbs is a good time for me," Jovin says. She had always found herself posting interesting, grammar-related articles on Facebook. Then, she had an idea. "Being on the computer too much makes you grumpy, and it's not good for overall life happiness, so I decided that I should take it to the streets,” Jovin says. “So, I’m doing what I did online, here." Jovin’s obsession with language is rooted in something really quite simple. "Language is connected to who we are as human beings, how we relate to one another, what ties us together,” she says. What surprises her most about interactions with people? “The warm fuzzy feeling I get from it,” Jovin says. “Because sometimes the conversations are so moving I almost feel like I might cry. See, I just used like as a conjunction right there.” She says she gets the occasional funny looks, but a lot of people love what Jovin is doing. Jovin offers grammar help in several different languages, even offering help to tourists visiting New York from other countries. It's these kinds of discussions that Jovin says now, in divided times, we should all be having more of, because good grammar is something we can all get behind."And people are happy to bond over something that they have in common, as opposed to focus on what tears them apart." 1662
J.D. Salinger thought of including his generation’s idea of a trigger alert as he worked on “The Catcher in the Rye.”In an early draft of the 1951 novel, narrator Holden Caulfield warns that the story will include “quite a bit of swearing and sex stuff.” But Salinger himself drew a large “X’ over the passage and wrote “delete” in the margins.”The manuscript is part of a Salinger exhibit which opens Friday and continues through Jan. 19 at the New York Public Library’s historic 5th Avenue branch in Manhattan. The display also includes family photographs, letters and other rarities from the famously private author, who died in 2010.The exhibit, titled “JD Salinger,” draws from archives made available by Salinger’s family and helps mark the centennial of his birth. 782
Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte says he is restricting travel nationwide to try to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. Conte said Monday night a new government decree will require all people in Italy to demonstrate they need to work, have health conditions or other limited legitimate reasons to travel outside their home areas. He said the restrictions will take effect on Tuesday and like those in northern Italy will last until April 3. Pubs had been closed in northern Italy, with eateries and cafes also ordered to close at dusk. Now that crackdown is extended to the entire country. 604
