URUMQI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The Xinjiang branch of China Charity Federation said Saturday it had received 2.03 million yuan (297,218 U.S. dollars) in donation from all walks of life for victims in the Urumqi riot.     The single largest donation is 200,000 yuan from the Xinjiang company of China Pacific Life Insurance Co., Ltd., said the federation.     Wu Jie, an employee of the insurance company, said she would like to do something for the dead and injured people. "We need to comfort the families of the dead and help the people who need medical treatment."     Maolaxifu Rishat, a businessman of the Tartar ethnic group who was the first to propose a comfort fund for riot victims, donated 5,200 yuan on behalf of 14 donators from 14 different ethnic groups.     "We pray for national unity in Xinjiang, so that we can have a peaceful and harmonious environment," he said.     Urumqi Public Transport Group, which suffered 37.6 million yuan as hundreds of its buses were torched or smashed, received 3.38 million yuan in donation from enterprises in the city. Five bus drivers of the group were killed by mobs and 57 others injured.     The riot in Xinjiang on July 5, the worst in six decades, caused a severe shortage of blood at local hospitals where more than 1,000 injured people were rushed in.     Shortly after the shortage was reported, many citizens rolled up their sleeves to donate blood.     On Friday, Urumqi's blood center announced the shortage had been eased, but donors continued to pour in.     A total of 1,315 people from 13 ethnic groups had come to the blood collection stations to donate 400,000 milliliters of blood as of 10 p.m. Friday. More than 1,000 other people have made appointments with blood collection centers to donate blood in the coming days.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has allocated more than 126 million yuan (about 18.4 U.S. dollars) for disaster relief in six worst rainstorm-hit provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities in south China, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Sunday.     The six provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities include Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou and Chongqing.     A total of 5,200 tents were also sent to Guangxi, Jiangxi and Hunan to provide shelter for the people displaced there, the ministry said.     While Beijing and neighboring provinces are fighting heat waves, the southern half of the country has been drenched in rain or flood since late June.     The latest round of rainstorms and flood, also this year's worst according to the ministry, had battered 12 provinces, killing 75 people and leaving another 13 missing and 938,000 homeless as of 4 p.m. Sunday.     Close to 40 million people were affected by the rainstorms and the flood, it said, adding that a total of 101,000 houses were toppled in the flood, causing over 13 billion yuan (about 1.9 billion U.S. dollars) in direct economic losses, it said.

BEIJING, July 13 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance announced Monday that the country's fiscal revenue in June rose 19.6 percent year on year to 686.75 billion yuan (100.5 billion U.S. dollars).     However, in the first half of this year, fiscal revenue fell 2.4 percent to 3.398 trillion yuan, said the ministry in a statement on its website.     The growth rate last month was 14.8 percentage points higher than the growth rate in May. Fiscal revenue fell 9.9 percent in the first four months this year from a year earlier to 2.05 trillion yuan due to shrinking business profits hit by the global economic slowdown and active fiscal policies including tax cuts to buoy domestic economic growth.     The ministry attributed the revenue rise in June to the stabilization of overall economic performance, growing business profits and the increase in the cigarette tax.     The government announced on June 20 the tax on cigarette cartons costing 70 yuan or more would rise to 56 percent from 45 percent, and the tax on cigarette cartons costing less than 70 yuan would rise from 30 to 36 percent.     Sales tax revenues rose 63.1 percent year on year in June, with business tax revenues edging up 6.4 percent, but the ministry did not specify the figures.     In June, China's fiscal expenditure increased 21.5 percent to 640.56 billion yuan from a year earlier. From January to June, the figure stood at 2.89 trillion yuan, up 26.3 percent from the same period last year.     The government unveiled a 4-trillion-yuan stimulus package in November last year to be spent over the next two years to shore up the world's third largest economy, with 1.18 trillion yuan from the central government.     Fiscal revenue includes taxes as well as administrative fees and other government income, such as fines and income from state-owned assets.

Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour of the autonomous region on Friday that all available efforts should be mobilized to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."     The Party's top official in charge of law enforcement stressed that efforts should be made to "resolutely implement" the spirit of the Political Bureau meeting on Wednesday night, and use "tough measures" to ensure stability.     President Hu Jintao on Wednesday night convened a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the deadly Xinjiang riot. "Those taking part in the riot due to provocation and deceit by separatists, should be given education."     Hu's stance in handling the riot was echoed by Zhou, one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, who arrived in the region Thursday afternoon.     Zhou said Thursday that the government and the Party would crack down hard on violence, severely punish the outlaws in accordance with the law, so as to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, safeguard ethnic unity and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible.     The country's top police officer Meng Jianzhu was the first senior official from the central government to arrive in the Xinjiang region.     When visiting residents injured by the rioters and family members of those victims in Urumqi on Wednesday, the state councilor and public security minister urged "no leniency in the punishment of thugs who took part in the Urumqi riot".     Meng said leading rioters should be punished "with the utmost severity" and those taking part in the riot, who were provoked and cheated by separatists, should be given persuasion and education.     "All the thugs in the riot should be severely punished in accordance with law, otherwise we will let the victims and their relatives down," Meng repeated his comment on Thursday while visiting residents in Urumqi and a funeral parlor to mourn the Armed Police and other victims of the riot.     Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang also stressed social harmony and stability on Wednesday.     He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a two-day visit to Gansu Province, which neighbors Xinjiang.     "The recent violence in Urumqi... has again alerted us to the importance of social stability. ROME, May 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met here Wednesday evening with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.     Before meeting with Berlusconi, Wu also met with Italian Senate President Renato Schifani Wednesday morning and signed an agreement on establishing a mechanism of regular exchanges between the Chinese NPC and the Italian Senate.     During his meetings with Italian leaders in Rome, Wu expressed the willingness of strengthening economic cooperation with Italy as a way to counter the impact of international financial crisis.     In an earlier meeting with Chinese entrepreneurs who are doing business in Italy, Wu said the financial crisis has brought about new opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and Italian companies.     The Italian leaders expressed the willingness to expand cooperation with China in various fields, saying China's economic growth will hopefully provide new energy for the recovery and rally of world economy.     Both sides agreed that the two countries should coordinate their stance on reform of the international financial system and work for an early recovery of global economy from the financial crisis.     China saw an economic growth of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of this year, the lowest quarterly figure in years.
