The father of New England Patriots running back James White was killed in a crash Sunday afternoon in South Florida, hours before his team's appearance on NBC's "Sunday Night Football."Broward Sheriff's Office Sgt. Donald Prichard said Miami-Dade police Capt. Tyrone White was killed in a two-vehicle crash about 1 p.m. along Griffin Road in Cooper City. Prichard said one vehicle overturned and the other caught fire. Two of the three victims were flown to a hospital for medical treatment, but the elder White was pronounced dead at the scene. After responding to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies last weekend, a Wooster, Ohio, family worries that they might have been taken advantage of. Not only do they not have the dog they were hoping to bring into their family, but they are also out more than ,500, the family said.In late August and in early November, the Mark family was forced to say goodbye to their two beloved dogs, one of which formerly belonged to Angela Mark's father who passed away earlier this year."That was all she had left of her father," Brady Mark said.The other dog, who passed away Nov. 15th, was a loveable American bulldog that was a companion animal to the Mark's teenage son. The family was taking the back-to-back losses pretty hard, Mark said, which explains why he and Angela so easily gravitated to an online advertisement for French bulldog puppies from a seller in Montana.The seller reportedly told Angela that a family member of his had also recently passed away. Unable to take care of the puppies himself, the seller reportedly said that he would offer a puppy at a steeply discounted rate but the Mark family would have to pay for shipping, which would be around 0.The seller could not be reached for comment and his online advertisement has been taken down.Angela says she was directed to use a Montana-based company, American Delivery Service. The company's fairly official-looking website says the company, "[aims] to provide pet owners with unique advanced solutions needed to fly with your pets." The website does not list an address and calls to the listed phone number were not answered.Additionally, there does not appear to be an official filing for American Deliver Service through the Montana Secretary of State's Office.In the contracts, messages and invoices from alleged representatives of American Delivery Service, there were numerous grammatical and spelling errors, as well as no official letterhead.In hindsight, Brady Mark said there were several red flags."We've been getting the runaround back and forth from the shipping company. Who's legitimate and who's not? We don't know yet," Mark said. "[Alleged company representatives] said, 'hey we need more money for this this and this.' We still have no dog and we're about 00 deep right now, probably even more than that."Mark said the alleged company went as far as to provide short videos and other media showing dogs in shipping containers, apparently suggesting the Mark's new puppy was in transit. There was also a shipment tracking number provided on the invoices. However, at every turn, there were demands for hundreds of dollars in order to pay for things like vaccines and special dog carriers.Angela Mark said an alleged company representative said the dog was waiting at a local airport and would be released to the family upon final payment. However, Brady Mark said he called the airport and an airport representative told him there weren't any animals in holding.Brady Mark said he and his wife have both come to the belief that their money may never be coming back."We borrowed money off of our daughter," Brady Mark said. "[Angela's] mom stepped in to try to help us out. We didn't just screw ourselves. We screwed other people in the process. It's going to screw us at the end of the month when bills start coming due. We might be short on rent. It's not their problem, it's ours. Still, if it can help somebody else to avoid what we just went through, so be it. If it prevents it happening from someone else, I guess I'll be that goat."According to the Better Business Bureau, so-called puppy scams have grown in number and in complexity in recent years. The past three years, the BBB has received nearly 10,000 reports of puppy scams. However, the FTC estimates that only 10% of victims actually come forward.Although the scams have grown more complex, they are often distinguishable by certain hallmarks. Possible red flags include communications only through email, copycat or easily obtainable stock photos and payments through non-traditional services like pre-paid gift cards. Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. For more than 40 years, The Guardian Angels have been putting their lives on the line to protect citizens. The group, which is made up of volunteers, don't get paid and don't carry weapons. Advocates of the group say they have made a big difference in public safety. But the group is having trouble attracting new members, and it's losing its headquarters in Colorado. It’s Saturday evening on one of Denver’s most dangerous streets, when the calls of concerns start coming in. “We got a report from a passerby about an individual shooting over here,” said Robi Salo, commander of the Colorado Guardian Angels. The word "shooting" refers to drug use, and that's exactly what Salo and his team found when they arrived to the scene. They approached young man, sitting in a parking lot with a needle in his hand. “We aren’t going to bust your b***s or nothing,” Salo says. “If you’re going to shoot, you’re going to shoot.”The young man decides, at least while the Guardian Angels are around, not to inject himself with drugs. Salo chalks it up a small win. Back in the day, the Guardian Angels had a reputation of being a Robin Hood, while robbing drug dealers and donating that money to local shelters. The group started out protecting New York City subway riders in the late 1970’s. The Colorado Guardian Angel chapter opened in Denver in 1993. Twenty-six years later, their numbers are dropping, their members are getting older and they’re losing their headquarters.“The numbers have dwindled over the years,” Salo says of the Colorado Guardian Angels. “Instead of having 100 active, we have 25 maybe on the deep list; probably about 12 that are heavily active. And we’re aging. I’m 55 we have members that are as old as 70.”Salo says while there are more Guardian Angels chapters across the country, the number of active members has stayed the same at around 3,000 since the mid-1990’s. The angels are aging out, but there is hope to replace them. “I’m kind of, right now, a rookie; fresh meat,” said Zane Salazar, who at 16 years old is following his father’s footsteps in becoming a Guardian Angel. “We want to show the community that we’re out there, show the community that we care, and I think people will come along if they see that.”We reached out to several national and local law enforcement agencies for their take on the Guardian Angels. None of them wanted comment, but police departments typically don't encourage citizens to take the law into their own hands. Their opinions on the Guardian Angels have been mixed over the years. 2558
