(KGTV) - A potentially flammable sea flare washed ashore at La Jolla Shores Tuesday, leading to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad investigation.A person who was walking on the beach near Kellogg Park found the flare canister and took it to the lifeguard station. The witness did not notify lifeguards, who found it about 3 p.m.Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said the flare had not been detonated and still posed a danger, despite the presence of water in the canister.The device appears to be similar to an MK 58 Mod 1 marine location marker. An online description indicates the marker is designed to be a smoke and flames reference-point marker on the ocean’s surface. It is used for antisubmarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, man-overboard markings, and as a target for practice bombings.The bomb squad reached out to the military Tuesday for guidance in the emergency. LA JOLLA (CNS) - A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized this morning with a fractured neck sustained in a two-vehicle crash at a La Jolla intersection.The woman was driving a 2015 Toyota Prius eastbound in the 8500 block of Whale Watch Way at 4:15 p.m. Friday when she ran a stop sign at Prestwick Drive and made a left turn where a 44-year-old man driving a 2018 Chevy Traverse northbound on Prestwick Drive broadsided the woman's car, according to Officer John Buttle with the San Diego Police Department.The woman was taken to a hospital with a fractured neck, police said. Alcohol was considered a factor in the crash. No arrests were reported. 654

John Thompson, the first Black man to coach a college basketball team to an NCAA championship and longtime fixture at Georgetown University, has died. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It's the happiest a Kansas City widower said he has been in three years."That's when our whole journey started," said Jim Purcell, who lost his 29-year-old wife Christy last year.Christy was diagnosed with brain cancer two months after their son, Jameson, was born.Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City reported earlier in April that Purcell's wedding rings had been stolen."It’s been a brutal journey. Every day was hard. When that ring was stolen, it was just another stab to the heart," said Purcell.Purcell shared the story on social media, explaining it was a devastating loss for him and his son."This was the one legacy item I wanted to pass on to him," said Purcell.Purcell's wallet was also stolen. The thieves used his credit card at the Walmart at 133rd and State Line; its surveillance video captured the alleged thieves’ faces.KCPD shared those images and together enough tips were gathered that detectives found the rings at a jewelry store in Raymore."They were honestly shocked," said Purcell.KCPD property crimes said it’s best to carefully photograph and document your items as extra insurance.
