The CDC said Friday that no one e-cigarette or vaping product has led to an outbreak of a severe lung disease that is sickening users across the country.According to a CDC press release,215 e-cigarette and vape users in 25 states have been sicked by a serious lung disease since August. That number does not include cases still under investigation.At least three people have died as a result of the disease.The Washington Post reports that there have been 450 cases of serious lung disease in 33 states, dating back to early summer.The CDC reported Friday that of all those sickened by the lung disease, many — but not all — reported using vape products containing THC. The agency did note that there were also some reports of patients using both THC and nicotine products, and a smaller group of patients that were only using nicotine products.The CDC's update came a day after the New York State Department of Health said it believes 949
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down more than 800 points on Tuesday — a day after the Dow dropped more than 1,000 points in the biggest single-day loss of 2020.The Dow finished Tuesday down 878 points, marking the fourth-largest one-day drop in the market's history. Fears about the worldwide spread of COVID-19, better known as coronavirus, have prompted a slowdown in global markets. The CDC compounded fears of the spread of the disease Tuesday when it said that Americans need to prepare for "significant disruptions" to their daily lives."Ultimately we expect we will see community spread in this country," CDC Director of Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Dr. Nancy Messonier. said. "It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness."The two-day drop has wiped out all year-to-date gains the Dow has made since the new year began.The loss also comes hours after President Donald Trump attempted to assuage fears of a global economic slowdown. Speaking at a press conference in India, Trump claimed that his administration would prevent the spread of the virus. Tesla is disputing claims by a California man that all three models of the company’s cars can suddenly speed up on their own without the driver touching the accelerator pedal.Tesla said Monday it checks when drivers report that their car accelerated on its own, and in every case where the company has the car’s data, it drove as designed.The company also claimed the man who filed a petition with federal safety officials is a short-seller of Tesla shares, referring to investors who borrow shares in a company’s stock and try to profit by replacing them after the share price falls.On Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it would look into a petition filed by Brian Sparks of Berkeley, California, and decide whether to open a formal investigation. Sparks’ allegations cover about 500,000 Teslas, including Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles in model years 2013 through 2019.Sparks said Tesla owners have lodged 127 complaints with the government, covering 110 crashes and 52 injuries.Tesla, which did not respond when asked for comment on Friday, posted a statement Monday saying its electric vehicles do not accelerate on their own.The company called the petition “completely false,” adding that “the car accelerates if, and only if, the driver told it to do so, and it slows or stops when the driver applies the brake.”Sparks said in his 69-page petition that many of the Tesla accidents happened during parking, that the complaint rate was much higher than for other vehicles, and that Tesla refused to share the car’s data with owners after incidents.The highway agency has yet to verify the complaints. The man who drove into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville's "Unite the Right" rally two years ago has pleaded for mercy and asked for a sentence less than life imprisonment in his federal hate crimes case.In a sentencing memorandum filed in federal court Friday, James A. Fields Jr. said the court should not give him a life sentence because of his young age, history of mental illness and childhood trauma, and to show that no one is defined by their worst moments."James did not come to Charlottesville with any plan to commit an act of violence. In the space of only a few minutes, caught in circumstances he did not intend to create, he acted in an aggressive and impulsive manner consistent with his mental health history and his age," the memo reads."In a matter of seconds he caused irreparable harm for which there is no excuse. But this Court can understand his actions, without excusing them, as symptomatic of transient immaturity, and not consider them to be predictive of who he might be in the future with time and medication."The memorandum notes that Fields' grandfather killed his grandmother and then himself, and that his father died in a car accident before Fields was born. His mother was in an accident that left her paraplegic before he was born and raised him as a single mother. The memo also says he has been taking medication since his imprisonment that has controlled his symptoms."No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits," the memo states.The memo comes ahead of his sentencing in his federal case, in which he pleaded guilty to 29 hate crimes in order to avoid the death penalty.Fields was 20 when he attended the August 2017 demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, and joined white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other groups opposed to the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. During a day of violent clashes in the city, Fields drove his vehicle into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old paralegal.Fields was convicted in state court of first-degree murder and other charges, and the jury recommended a sentence of life in prison. The American workforce isn't what it used to be."I saw an app that said 'dog sitting,' and I thought I could do that in my spare time," says gig worker Lawrence Snell. "It turned out that now I have up to six or eight dogs a day."For 40 hours a week, Snell takes care of other people's dogs through the app Rover.It's a temp job like Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, Postmates and others. It's the kind of work driving--what experts are now calling --"the gig economy". However, the concept isn't completely new. Americans have always worked odd jobs, but the number of people participating in them has gone up, due in part to advanced technology and wages not increasing. For most people, jobs like app-based deliveries or ride-sharing have been a little extra income on the side. But for a growing number of others, it's work that pays the bills without the commitment that comes with a traditional 9-to-5. "Going to work, clocking in, and working for the man… if I can do a gig where I can spend more time with my family and more time renovating my house and doing the things that I love, then yeah, that's more beneficial to me," Snell said says. Certain gig workers don't just stick to one job. Behailu Fitzjames spends his days working as many gigs as he can, turning everyday into a different adventure. Grubhub, Postmates, Uber Eats and Lyft are the main ones he’s a part of."Even some time I have left, I'll go on Craigslist gigs and look up who needs help, what's something new I could do," Fitzjames says. For Behailu it's been a steady source of income giving him freedom and flexibility to control his own schedule. "If you're driving around you can make 0 an hour with Lyft and Uber," Fitzjames says. "It's also varying, so that's kind of cool versus being at a fixed income."But it comes without the work protections many of us are used to having. The Trump Administration's labor department recently said it considers gig workers to be independent contractors. Not only are these workers allowed to control their hours, but they can also work for competing companies. However, the term "independent contractor" leaves them ineligible for things like overtime pay, workers compensation, and benefits. Most gig workers agree they'd like to see that change. "I think it should be offered, and I think it should be offered at a fair rate," Snell says. "I don't see why you should be punished for doing gig work."But some, like Behailu, are concerned that money for benefits would come out of their paycheck. "Being a contractor means you get to set everything up for yourself," Fitzjames says. "Having them offer insurance and all the benefits, I suppose, you wouldn't be making as much money, because more money would be trying to fund that."We partnered with Newsy and the polling firm Ipsos to further understand what people really think. We found most Americans believe gig workers should be afforded the same labor protections as full-time employees. Support for that among gig workers themselves is even higher. That could be because more people are working gigs full-time. The most recent data from the Fed shows that 18 percent of American gig workers rely on their gigs for their primary source of income. "Whether it's unemployment insurance, whether it's minimum wage protections, whether it's the ability to earn overtime - there's been a series of benefits and protections that built up over the course of the 21st century that you only can access if you're an employee," Al Fitzpayne, with Future of Work Initiative, explains. "And so, that is why the employee distinction is so significant relative to that of an independent contractor is a very important consideration." Gig workers are fully responsible for their own healthcare, retirement, and sick time, which can be a struggle, considering the money they're making may not be as much as some people think. For example, Uber once claimed its drivers in major U.S. cities were making between ,000 to ,000 a year. But recent data shows average hourly wages for ride-share drivers are much lower, and companies are taking a bigger cut. "All these companies are making lots of money, and it's time to spread that money around.
